I worked at City of Bloomington as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Pretty laid back atmosphere, good hands on experience, learn how to do various behind-the-scenes work with road reconstruction projects. The people were really nice

    Cons

Fairly dry job, Some people were definitely not "people persons" and sometimes the work environment was awkward. Lots of Intern-type tasks were given. Job lacks structure.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Add structure and organization to this position. Everything was learn-as-you-go.

I worked at City of Bloomington

    Pros

A bit laid down office atmosphere, Very nice friendly staff pool, very good benefits for Full time employee. Good parking space for Employees and clients.

    Cons

No so much of out of office events or activities which they need to include to give employee time to know each other outside of office environments. No benefits for Part time employees which they have some staff which have never got chance to be full time even though they have worked there for over 10 yrs.

I worked at City of Bloomington

    Pros

Positive, supportive place to work. Progressive city. Great benefits and competitive pay.

    Cons

Not much room for advancement but that depends on the department. Located in south Bloomington.

I have been working at City of Bloomington full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

If you can get a full time job, they do give you benefits.

    Cons

There are tons of clicks and promotion is not based on merit. It is very important who you make friends with - it has an effect on advancement. Wages do not increase on a schedule. Just because you are qualified, can do the work well, and have asked to do the work does not mean they even interview you for the position when it becomes available.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The City Manager rules everything. City Council makes poor decisions on a regular basis.

I have been working at City of Bloomington full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Decent work environment, can learn about all facets of municipal govt, decent pay and benefits

    Cons

goals can change after each election, little opportunity to provide feedback to Sr leadership, govt does not go near the cutting edge due to beauracracy. Little opportunity for advancement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the employees that do the work and have the experience. Citizens fell you should work for free.
