I worked at City of Boulder

    Pros

Coworkers really care about the citizens they serve and the work is meaningful. The pay is decent too.

    Cons

Upper management has turned the workplace into a classist environment. They don't appreciate their employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get real ! You are at the city to make a difference, not to make a name for yourselves.

I worked at City of Boulder as an intern (more than a year)

    Pros

Positive work environment, walking meetings, overall a good temporary position spot.

    Cons

Pay is not great, and training is on the job, but even that is manageable.

I worked at City of Boulder full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Because the citizens of Boulder are very willing to finance projects, there are many learning opportunities at the City of Boulder. For the people who need training, they are willing to pay for the training to keep you current on skills.

    Cons

The area I worked in would not pay for schooling only training, there was an expectation of the employees to work 60-70 hours a week. There is not work-life balance. Most people cannot afford to live in Boulder, so it was frequently discussed that over 70% of the workforce commuted into Boulder to work. The pay is comparable to Denver but the cost of living does not factor into the pay. It costs much less to live in Denver than it does in Boulder.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

For the hours commitment and the cost of living in the city, this should be considered when evaluating pay scales. Also, there is value in keeping the people you have and not continuously training new employees. I find it surprising that upper management/city manager/city council do not find it odd that the only people that they can hire are from out of state.

I worked at City of Boulder as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

I loved working here. The staff are friendly and I got to workout for free. My supervisor was one of the coolest guys I've ever met.

    Cons

I had no car so had to rely on public transportation to get around. Not too terrible if you live in Boulder, but I was commuting from Aurora to Denver and then Denver to Boulder (there and back every day)

I worked at City of Boulder part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Very fun job if you're a student, as the other lifeguards are also students. The pool is a fun place to work, sure beats working in a hot McDonalds. The pay isn't too bad also.

    Cons

There were none really. You could say that it was sometimes a bit hard to get up very early (which is optional), but I had no problems with that.

    Pros

This is a great place to work if you're a student and just looking for an hourly job to help pay the bills or for a little extra spending cash.

    Cons

It can be hard to get shifts covered, though this is not always the case.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The scheduling system needs to be updated to some sort of electronic system.
