I worked at City of Calgary full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

the best things for working for the city would be the learning experience you will receive, also, the city is a reliable work place and a good place to work

    Cons

the city has great benefits, and when you start working within the company you have a chance to be promoted no one will stop you from moving up the corporate latter.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My advise to management is to just talk to the employees and make them feel like part of the family at the City

I worked at City of Calgary

    Pros

work in down town, good benefits.

    Cons

Most of the finance department, there are very few people speak or talk in English. Even in the finance meetings English is the last language to speak. Very disrespectful and boring environment. Promotion is merely based on who you know or which group you belong to. Some people are very competent and working really hard but I see some employee sleeping regularly on their jobs. I will not recommend anybody to go in the finance department if you like challenging work environment or like to grow professionally.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire and promote people on merit, based on qualifications, experience and knowledge.

I worked at City of Calgary (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Public service ... doing a job that benefits all citizens

    Cons

Certain senior individuals forget that they are public servants ... paid by the taxpayer. They feel they can do whatever they like, ruin people's careers and never be held accountable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't give jobs to your buddies and cronies. Labour Relations in cahoots with the management ... never asks the employee for their side of things. Good people dismissed because of petty politics. I have written to the Mayor about this ... no response or action. The senior guys feel they are immune and can do as they please. Very bad deal for the taxpayers.

I worked at City of Calgary as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Reasonable salary, good benefits and flexible work options (every 3rd Friday off)

    Cons

Very political position caught power play between HR and C/S groups.
Management were more interested in anything right now rather than doing the job right.

I have been working at City of Calgary part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Great benefits, I like the work.

    Cons

Forced to work weekends for at least two years. We do the same job as our full time counterparts but get paid much lower. In fact, we get paid much lower for driving a bus than the people cleaning the buses and the LRT stations get. I don't understand this since we are responsible for people's safety.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Review the pay that community shuttle operators get. The pay system is barbaric compared to every other job at The City of Calgary. It is unfair and nobody in management seems to notice or care.
