I have been working at City of Calgary full-time

    Pros

If you have good management you can get flexible work options like compressed work week 4/4, & 4/5 (unless you're in the Planning Dept), telework, and a flexible schedule. Conference & training opportunities (unless you're in the Planning Dept), and most of management like to provide promotive opportunities to internal staff except for the Planning Department which now has a revolving door.

    Cons

HR department doesn't catch managers who have high turn around or early retiring staff, a general attitude of what we don't know won't hurt us. Caucasian males tend to be given special opportunities and be hired over women, ethnic people or simply qualified candidates. HR refuses to do mandatory exit interviews as many private comanies make a rule of. Free information which weeds out bad managers, City policies tend to protect bad management and promote favourites among the boys club.

    Advice to Management

Make exit interviews mandatory, it's the most useful free information a company will ever get. Make 360 reviews for managers mandatory. Audit which managers and coordinators never use rewards & recognition - why are they never able to appropriately show appreciation? Never cut education opportunities for technical staff, it will bite you in the bum when you find out you've made that person redundant.

    Pros

    Steady employment and good benefits.

    Cons

No one is held to task for bad behavior. (working in a male dominated job)

    Advice to Management

Bad behavior causes poor morale, it is running rampant in my department.

I worked at City of Calgary as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Reasonable salary, good benefits and flexible work options (every 3rd Friday off)

    Cons

Very political position caught power play between HR and C/S groups. Management were more interested in anything right now rather than doing the job right.

    So much potential....

    Pros

Excellent salary and benefits. The flexibility can't be beat with flex time options, compressed work weeks, etc. Sometimes it truly feels like we are serving the public -and that feels great.

    Cons

It's a "defensive" culture. Lack of security with constant re-orgs, and public scrutiny create a culture where everyone is trying to protect or defend the work they are vested in. This culture filters right down to the lower levels.

    Advice to Management

The entire corporation needs a severe culture shift where it feels like Administration is working WITH Council...not simply trying to please them. Need to sell the benefits of our work to the public, rather than always focusing on cutbacks (I suspect in the end most re-orgs often "undo" themselves and in the long run they can actually cost more money).

I have been working at City of Calgary full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Quality benefits, possibility for work-life balance (depending on the business unit), good wages, training opportunities, health and wellness at work, great employee and family benefits program, solid recognition program, opportunity to join co-workers for after work activities.

    Cons

Each of the business units has its own culture and many offer additional benefits to their staff. The City isn't a cohesive corporation but rather it is decentralized and offers a wide spectrum of work environments and cultures. You must do research before starting at The City, especially if you're looking for a cultural fit. There are some business units with terrific internal culture while others are toxic. There are also some new concerns on the horizon as The City looks to young candidates to fill management positions. There are pros and cons to young managers/leaders. The pros are that they are interested in innovation and change and are looking to new technology to achieve this. The cons are they have limited managerial/leadership experience making it difficult to report to them. The big con related to limited experience is that most don't have sufficient experience to set strategic direction and allocate resources properly. That said, most employees are very professional and polished and optimistic

I worked at City of Calgary full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Many of the people at The City of Calgary are dedicated to making our city better.

    Cons

Like anywhere, there are a few bad apples. Some employees forget they are there to work for the common good and not just for themselves. I've also never worked at a place where people watched the clock so closely - cubicles were full at 4:29 and empty at 4:30 pm.

    Advice to Management

There are a lot of talented people there--ensure they are supported and challenged.
