    No life work balance odd hours hard on family

    Cons

    low pay and no overtime benefits

    Pros

    If your focus is not good quality work but how to play well in a highly political environment, you may have a good fortune.

    Cons

    Very Unprofessional
    People are placed in roles that don't fit there skill set. Plus they will politicize the environment around you if you try to suggest anything good, eventually it will hurt you because you are new...:)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    When u hire people make your expectations clear and then give the person time to do prove. Please if you really look and work for the City then take out the Rotten Eggs who are a disgrace to the positions they are placed in.

    Pros

    Benifits for the family, pay chueqe never bounces, some of your co-workers turn into family and will always care for you and have your back

    Cons

    Full of political nonsense, management looks out for management, the union looks out for management, HR looks out for management, full of drama if you don't buy the bosses coffee you are replaceable and expendable, the bosses have there favorites who get anything in the world, otherwise you are paid from the neck down

    Retire and let someone who cares take your place and fix things

    I worked at City of Edmonton as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

    Friendly atmosphere, and nice people. Hours are the same as full-time staff; hence, the work-days are just the right length.

    Cons

    City has to appease the union...contractors are let go frequently. The goal is to limit contractors to 6 months or less...preferably less. As a result the politics can be bad. The pay is less that what you can make elsewhere too.

    Provide more feedback to contractors.

    Pros

    -Good Pay
    -Near Transportation Hubs
    -Near Civic services
    -Near Festival and Event hubs

    Cons

    - Employer does not adhere to schedule preferences
    -Seniority is Irrelevant
    - Crystal-ball schedule 'forecasting' results in understaffed busy days and overstaffed easy days
    -Vacation Approvals occur days before the requested time. Going on any meaningful vacation is next to impossible.
    -Management does not understand the job they are managing for.
    -Management complicates what should be a very easy job with extra nonsense such as specific catch phrases and advertisements of other services often reserved for the private sector.
    - Stress caused by poor scheduling, restrictive vacation timeliness and disconnected management cause a gradual increase in absenteeism. In turn causing more stress for employees who maintain a consistent presence.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Schedule forecasting is the same as fortune telling. Have a morning, day, evening, and night shift.
    adhere to schedule preferences. It's easy to preach 'city values' when you go home at 5pm and get consistent vacation for running excel spreadsheets. You have human beings working for you. Treat them like it.

    The city was very flexible with vacation and scheduling around University students schedule.

    Cons

    Lots of politics, treat employees poorly, kept as part time temp to avoid benefits.

    Job security, good life work balance scope to increase your knowledge and skill

    Cons

    low pay and too many deductions make the same wage as a 1st year apprentice in the private sector. Pension benefits are low to retiring employees. pension scheme not very transparent plans to increase retirement age to 67 years

    Allow vertical progression of lower employees too many road blocks for promotions.

    The leadership is very close to their teams and working to improve everyone's performance in a very respectful way
    The atmosphere is very good. I moved to another city otherwise I would never have left that job.

    shift work is a bit challenging.
