I have been working at City of Hampton part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Awesome experience, nice opportunities for growth, good benefits, my department's management does a good job working with everyone and spreading information.

    Cons

Other city departments NEED to do a much better job at communicating with the 311 Call Center. 311 is where most of phone calls come and without good communication from city departments, 311 can't do their job at providing good infomation. City council makes decisions without thinking about how the decisions would affect Hampton's citizens.

I have been working at City of Hampton part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Working in 311 Call Center. Nice work-life balance (currently a WAE). Supportive co-workers and supervisors. Interaction with all levels of city government and good opportunities to learn what each department does and what they do to perform their job.

    Cons

    1) Not many opportunities for advancement into permanent full-time positions, at least within the same department (would have to apply for a PFT position in another department and then that depends on if you get that position). 2) My department is up for budget cuts, to include cuts in hours of operations, EVERY YEAR. Leads to fear of cuts in staffing. 3) Lack of communication from other departments. 4) NO benefits for WAE's

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do better at getting information from other departments that would make it easier for the 311 Call Center to properly do their job (can help cut down in giving out wrong or outdated information). That goes for EVERY city department.

I worked at City of Hampton full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Ability to "flex" the schedule, good to work with co-workers that have the same personal mission (to help those in need of help), benefits and bi-weekly pay schedule.

    Cons

Pay is lower than other localities, administration has much different priorities and do not utilize the talents and abilities of their staff members, supervisors and above do not care about the ones that are doing all of the work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look beyond the budget constraints and appreciate the employees you have.

I have been working at City of Hampton full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

There are only cons for working with Hampton. Try applying to other Cities.

    Cons

Employees are under staffed and over worked based on a ""Reduction in Force" that has occurred more than once and continues to occur. 8 hours of vacation and sick leave a month which increases by 2 hours every 5 years. No raises since 2008, except a 1% raise for Fiscal Year 2014 which did not offset the raise in real estate tax so local employees were negative. High cost of insurance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reinstate the positions that were eliminated and re-evaluate the salaries of your employees. There are a large number of employees with great degrees from great schools who qualify for public assistance. You have high turn over for a reason. Give raises, your employees deserve them. Make sure there is a place for employees to aspire to, currently there are no positions for people to receive promotions unless you are fire or police.

I have been working at City of Hampton part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Co-workers and management (at least in my department) are very supportive. Working as a WAE allows flexibility and a good work-life balance. There are good job opportunities, whether it be in the same department or other departments. A plus about my job is that I get to learn about all of the city's departments and how they all fit together. This allows me to educate the public on how the city operates and I know where to turn to provide help to the public.

    Cons

Unless the city finds a way, there is NO hope for raises. Full time employees have not received raises in the past several years.

I worked at City of Hampton

    Pros

    - Middle management is hard working and dedicated to goal attainment.
    - Middle management shows compassion and understanding, willing to listen to their dedicated, hardworking employees.
    - Business casual work environment.
    - Centrally located for great places to visit and dine on your lunch break (if you manage to squeeze one in).
    - A sense of community among City employees. It's nice to receive a friendly hello outside of work from a familiar face you work with.

    Cons

    - Promotions and career growth is evident among those who are members of the "in" clique or the "good ole' boy" network.
    - Although most members of middle managmeent listen to their hardworking employees, many do not extend noteworthy recognition and praise to their employees nor do they support the education and career ambitions of those employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Department heads will accomplish more and see a greater return for themselves and their department should they be willing to extend noteworthy praises and recognition to their hard working ,dedicated employees as well as support the education and career growth ambitions of those employees who are dedicated to goals and mission of their department head and the department.
