    Pros

Wonderful Coworkers. Lots of teamwork. Patient always first. Very compassionate hardworking highly skilled staff

    Cons

Adminstration top heavy. Too many chiefs not enough indians. Lots of politics.

    Advice to Management

Start putting employees needs first for a change instead of your own. Stop cutting staff and benefits. Constantly giving more to adminstration and taking away from the actual employees that makes the wheels turn. Happy employees=happy patients.....more business...more profit.

    Pros

Rich history of patient care, enthusiastic supporters and scientific discoveries. Beautiful campus

    Cons

Currently lost its way. Many stops and starts and reversals of decisions. Communication that is stiff and insincere Leaders with values and integrity leaving in droves so "new way" can be implemented. HR is running the place (until the large staff of lawyers has to step in)
processes take precedent over people. Lack of respect for long term productive employees...unless you are willing to fall into lockstep with the "strategy"

    Advice to Management

Board has a responsibility to evaluate the leadership beginning with the CEO. And, they need to fire the conslutant club that is making a fortune telling leadership what to do.

    Pros

I love the feeling to trying to save lives. Love the people who actually do the work and overall mission statement of the organization. As someone who worked for over 15 years, I have met a lot of highly regarded and talented individuals working at City of Hope.

    Cons

As an organization tasked with such as mission critical aspect of the society, there are SO MUCH WASTE and pity in fighting. Different hospital operations departments fighting with each other to hold claim of pity territories. Which have a direct impact to the productivity of their staff and work they do.
The hoops I have to jump through to get something done would make the US government seems like Disneyland, which is ironic considering where the COO came from.

    Advice to Management

Stop the pity in-fighting and territories claims and come together to make thing happen!

    Pros

City of Hope creates miracles, has a gorgeous campus, and committed employees.

They organization offers a Learning and Personal Development week each year where speakers and trainers are brought in to lead dozens of short sessions on a variety of topics.

Unfortunately, that is the extent of professional development offered to most staff.

    Cons

From the perspective of the business and IT functions, City of Hope is disorganized and unfortunately plagued with employees who have not received the training and development to remain relevant and effective. This seems to be the case from the staff level up to the senior management levels.

HR seems to pride itself in declining raises and promotions, resulting in the best and brightest abandoning the firm.

In spite of a comprehensive strategic plan, and magnificent researchers and doctors, the company seems to be on a down hill slide. It's bound to impact the level of care patients receive and the company's ability to remain competitive.

    Advice to Management

If you think it's expensive to hire and develop outstanding staff, consider how expensive it is to the organization and our patients to NOT make that investment.

    Pros

Last hope for many with terminal diseases
    Excellent research facilities (own GMP)
    Compensation; although this is changing
Peer to peer environment; although this is changing

    Cons

Lack of leadership at the senior level; very little direction but a lot of cheerleading
Waste funds on management studies that go nowhere; wait 6-12 months and do the same thing again
A lot of "feel good" administrative positions and functions at the expense of performing operational positions
    Destroying "compassion" atmosphere amoungst employees
Bottom line; a lot of medical research brain power, but way short on organizational and operational skills in leadership.

    Advice to Management

Advice to the Board; fire the CEO, COO, and CFO. They are bringing City of Hope (COH) down.
Bring back the core value of "compassion".
Check with HR on the recent/current mass exodus from COH; find out the reasons why.
    Hire people with organization skills.
    Bring back accountability.
