I worked at City of Hope full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

An amazing history and fabulous philosophy and mission. Beautiful campus setting. Many dedicated professionals who are committed to providing quality care - yet morale is low and people feel concerned about their future as they see great people let go.

    Cons

Despite many wonderful qualities, there are many challenging aspects to working at City of Hope. Unfortunately, there is a willingness to exploit staff, too many politics and too often a toxic work environment that contributes to low staff morale and dissatisfaction.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Attend to employee concerns to create a positive work environment where people feel truly valued.

Most management is incompetent. HR is there to protect management, not employees. Few promote from within, terrible pay

I have been working at City of Hope full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Compensation is limited at 10%, even when changing jobs. This forces people to leave and come back to get anywhere near industry standard pay. IT was a well oiled machine with good management, but all of them have been cleared/forced out and replaced by outsiders that have created a toxic work environment. Stability is laughable. They have plenty of management, but not enough workers to do the job. Work life balance is horrible for those with salary/on call positions. They do try to have company sponsored activities such as BBQ, holiday parties, but hard to attend/enjoy with work schedule. Basketball and Volleyball court for reecreation, GYM, running track.

    Cons

Constantly changing bureaucratic mess. Consistency in management is a joke. Vacation and holidays are not enough. Too much time spent working outside of work for no compensation. Highly stressful. COH hardly promotes from within, instead they use contractors and hire on the ones they like, and fire/layoff long time employees that questions/stand up to management. This gives little to no room for growth. Raises hardly cover cost of living. Parking is a nightmare and they can't even pave some dirt areas that are always parked in. Vending machines have all been replaced with low calorie options as if I am not smart enough to make my own food choices.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Encourage talent to stay with good compensation etc Eliminate the 10% raise limit when switching jobs, aka, pay people for the work they do. Stop hiring leadership from people who were fired from their last job. Stop the nepotism, or cherry picking of your buddies into high level positions instead of of letting HR recruit good people, or promote from within. Practice what you preach, you claim "retain talent" yet I see it walk out the door far too often. Get an HR advocate for employees whose role isn't to protect management, but for employees.

I worked at City of Hope full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great people, great contributions to cancer community.

    Cons

Difficult to grow, managers have very little experience managing, typical health care company silos, my division saw three different Vice Presidents in 3 years. Most of the employees are in fear of being laid off even though the average employee has been there 10 years that they do very little socializing and fun employee events.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management training is necessary and build the diversity and inclusion of employees.

I have been working at City of Hope full-time

    Pros

Not many. The main campus has beautiful gardens and lots of beverage/food options onsite which you need because there's nothing nearby. Some people are really nice. Free parking.

    Cons

The culture is seriously toxic and everyone is focused on finding someone to blame for every little thing instead of stepping up to fix broken systems and processes. I came in wanting to drive change and I've never been more deflated or depressed in a workplace. IT systems are a decade out of date, computers barely function and replacements take months. It's also in the middle of nowhere with little to offer close to campus.

    Pros

Top Researchers and Physicians who truly care about their patients.

    Cons

Low morale that promotes a culture of "bullying" and retaliation from management; top-heavy management with no regard for administrative staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the Sr Managers and Directors. If you don't trust your managers then they should be let go instead of laying off staff that actually contribute to the organization.

    Pros

People love this place. Lovely campus. Salary compensation seems to be more competitive than others.

    Cons

Retirement plan can be better. Company contributes 6% of salary, but no bonuses or retirement medical plan.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recent efforts to downsize must be tempered with incentives for talent to stay. This will be a challenge.
