I worked at City of Houston

    Pros

    All the holidays off
    balance work/life
    Employees are hard-workers.

    Cons

I worked for the City of Houston as an Intern for a month, then I was asked to come onboard as a contract worker promising a guarantee employment after I graduated from college.
The City of Houston is known for a steady job and benefits. Well, the benefits are no longer what they used to be. " Steady employment, " means there is no room for growth unless you are one of the "favorite upper-management employees." Try applying for a job with the City and see if you'll receive a call, or email back, even if you have applied 15 times ! City of Houston works on the " good 'ole boy system. " Even if you are qualified your application will never get to the hire manager before COH employees relatives. If you are one of the lucky ones to land a job with City, please learn as much as you can and RUN !

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Stop with the office politics
If you see an individual that is a hard-worker, and eager to learn promote that person
    Stop hiring relatives
Look at everyone application without bias intent.

I worked at City of Houston full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

The City of Houston provides excellent training, company values, benefits, parking incentives and competitive pay.

    Cons

Administrative and/or office personnel are not recognized in a timely manner when it comes to promotions within the company. As a result, they are relocated or passed over to fill vacancies and not rewarded.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Office staff members are the right hand to upper management. They work selfishly to accommodate management and are expected to maintain daily operations of the office. Without us, the office would not run as smoothly.

    Cons

Salary; little opportunity for growth; some areas afraid of growth or change; no bonuses; departments seem to work independently

I have been working at City of Houston full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Interdepartmental promotions are encoraged, so there's an opportunity to delevop new skills and of course increase your pay. You'll vest in the pension plan after 5 yrs of working there. The health benefits are decent. Union demands across the board pay raises for employees periodically. Typically good work life balance depending on the particular manager or group that you work for.

    Cons

Departments operate independently so there's a lack of team efforts as a whole. Office politics drive most decision making regarding personnel. Merit increases are extremely rare.

    Pros

Benefits if you are looking for that. If you are close to the IAH management team it will be pleasurable for you.

    Cons

Bullying, harassment, prejudice, unfair practices. Management is very disorganized and favors some employees over others. Would not recommend IAH as a place of employment for anyone. No recognition to those who deserve it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize those who deserve it. Stop being unfair.

I have been working at City of Houston as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Very accomodating. Great place to learn about public policy and government affairs. Great place to network.

    Cons

Unpaid internships. Lack of real integration of interns into the work of the office.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Interns are here to learn but they can also make a valuable contribution. Keeping interns on the side-line makes learning opportunities somewhat limited and prevents them from contributing as much as they could. Maybe paying interns would be a good incentive for both managers to involve interns more and interns to stay implicated.
