I have been working at City of Houston as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Very accomodating. Great place to learn about public policy and government affairs. Great place to network.

    Cons

Unpaid internships. Lack of real integration of interns into the work of the office.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Interns are here to learn but they can also make a valuable contribution. Keeping interns on the side-line makes learning opportunities somewhat limited and prevents them from contributing as much as they could. Maybe paying interns would be a good incentive for both managers to involve interns more and interns to stay implicated.

I have been working at City of Houston full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Coworkers, pay and benefits, vacation and holidays

    Cons

Drama, bullying, gossip, overt and covert nepotism, unfairness, pettiness, extremely stressful, low morale, incompetent management, lack of character and integrity across the board

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Appreciate your core group. Those are the workers that make your organization successful. They're loyal, devoted, and grind every day with little or no complaint, regardless of their own personal circumstances. They are an asset to your organization, no matter how hard your managers/supervisors/nepotist employees try and make them believe otherwise. I've seen a lot of great people leave because of that. It's a shame, really. This organization really has the potential to be listed as one of the greatest places in the country to work, but the rampant cruelty, unnecessarily competitive atmosphere, hyper-stressful and unsupportive environment makes the organization hostile.

    Pros

Location, job security after the one year probation period.

    Cons

Nepotism. Ghetto administration. How embarrassing. Coworkers are all out to get you, there is no team spirit whatsoever.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fire everyone, including yourselves, and start over.

    Pros

Good benefits but you have to wait 6 months. No overt time.
