I have been working at City of Markham part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Relaxed culture, depending on your supervisor. A pretty decent part time flexible job for a student. Easy to get the job.

    Cons

Compensation is below average> You need to pay for your own qualifications. no union, perks, or room for promotion
Expect to be working at home for 1 hour of prep per class, unpaid. Report cards take hours to write and the time is unpaid.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give better compensation, give lifeguards a union.

I worked at City of Markham part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

I was a lifeguard/aquatic instructor so I got to choose which shifts i preferred. The pay was also good for my first part-time job. It allowed me to meet a lot of different students from other schools and make new friends.

    Cons

As a lifeguard/instructor, there may be times where it may be too overwhelming as you have to write many report cards for all your classes, while keeping up with school homework.

I worked at City of Markham part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Friendly, welcoming and positive environment, cared about employees, big focus on customer satisfaction, easy communication with co-workers. If you did your work on time and accurately, no problem during 'evaluations'.

    Cons

Limited flexibility in scheduling, designated duties at all times.

  6. A great avenue for career development for those pursuing studies in community, social work, recreation, arts/culture.

I worked at City of Markham full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Fun environment to work with, new staff and new graduates always to fill middle-supervisor and program leadership roles. Great commitment to child safety and community engagement.

    Cons

Oblivious Senior Management to work and efforts of "Fieldworkers", HR creates great barriers in getting interviews and positions which allow for advancement. Great ideas but the aim is for "yes-people" and it seems they reward people who "have been there longest" rather than those who contribute the most (the gusy in the trenches/frontlines).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Compensation for qualifed and experiences staff members needs to be reflected in their wages. It is not all about change, change, change...so members of the community actually favour some continuity!

I have been working at City of Markham part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

easy work and the opportunity to make tons of friends with peers

easy to fit into work/school schedule especially if you are a student.

paid off for my university years

    Cons

terrible upper management, misspending and budget cuts only affecting front line, stupid decision makers, staff are treated like they are expendable, do not expect them to back you up in tough situations, lose-lose situation

Pay is lowest in the GTA, pay for own recerts, not all hours are compensated

Typical government job except you are not management so you get the short end of the stick

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

needs to be heavily re organized, current management is redundant and clueless about their areas of supervision

    Doesn't Recommend
