ProsEasy commute, decent pay. I like NYC its a great place to live and is a nice secure job. decent benefits, and not bad hours. I can help people which is nice.

ConsBeaurocracy, government, the public, red tape. Too much work. i want to work less, and have my job be easier, but it seems to get much harder each year.

Advice to Senior Managementless taxes. more money to the people.

ProsKnowing that your there to save lives and help the residents of New York City. The lights, the, loud siren, and the continued action of being an EMT with FDNY is the best.

ConsPay doesn't match sacrifices made, but still equally rewarding knowing that your brothers and sisters are there for you and you for them.

In a large bureaucracy, your manager is everything

ProsYou get to really make a difference for constituents. The benefits are excellent (healthcare is entirely free, for example). Most titles get paid or comp overtime.

ConsHuge bureaucracy. Processes that are instant in the private world can take months within the City.

Slow but Satisfying

Prosreal sense of collaboration towards a large and important cause
opportunity to reap the benefits of promotion and pension if you stick around long enough
my department is full of nice, smart and hard-working people--there are exceptions to the view of cityworkers as plodding dimwits!
good work/life balance

Consthings tend to move slow
there's no set track towards promotion--you kind of have to get lucky
limited flexibility--my agency does not permit telecommuting
