    Haphazard Leadership

Data Analyst (Current Employee) New York, NY

ProsThe benefits are great...after 5 years, you get 4 weeks of vacation.
It is possible to move from one city agency to another without losing any of your benefits (e.g., vacation, sick leave, pension, etc.)
If you retire out the of the City, you get free medical for the rest of your life.

ConsThe salary is not great unless you are in a management position. In Social Services part of City of New York, only females are promoted. Men are overlooked even if they are more talented and have more experience than the women.
Management wants to make the data say what they are thinking.
Female supervisors tend to be insecure and need constant reassurance.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire qualified people. Stop the nepotism. Female supervisors need to be secure in their position and not view every man as a threat.

Not challenging but good work-life balance

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsWorking for the city is great if you want good work-life balance. The hours are short, and anything extra goes towards comp time. Also, the work can be meaningful since it affects New Yorkers. NYC employees keep the city running.

ConsThe work is not very challenging, and of course, there's a lot of politics involved. Things move very slowly and inefficiently. The salary is low, and you should expect to move up slowly.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake sure your younger employees are challenged and kept busy

    Posititve

Attorney (Former Employee) New York, NY

ProsLot's of training. Strictly 9 to 5 job. Great if you have a family. Attorney's have the ability to receive free CLE. Room for growth. The agency as a whole is expanding at a rapid pace.

ConsTop heavy in management. Strict chain of command policy. Does not allow for managment to understand day to day struggles of their emploees.

Advice to Senior ManagementFoster an enviornment that encourages teamwork and rewards hard work.
