I worked at City of New York as an intern (more than an year)

    Pros

People are great to work with and are interested in what you bring to the table. I was always given opportunities to challenge myself and really felt part of the team. The area is also great!

    Cons

Some systems are too structural- but that's like anything in government. The office is really outdated, and can use a major facelift.

You know when you work for the City of New York, when the clock strikes 5, everyone is out.

I have been working at City of New York full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Stable/confirmed job security (from the civil service exam). Great benefits, holidays off, stable shift (child-friendly tours) depending on your agency, nice, cool down-to-earth coworkers (not all of them), OT is available if you are willing to jump over many hoops to get it, pension + 403b retirement. When 5o clock hits, everyone is out.

    Cons

SALARY SUCKS; very bureaucratic; too many chiefs, not enough Indians, a very volatile and vindictive environment...you learn to choose your battles, workload is a "slap in the face", job duties become extremely mundane, promotion second to none unless you take a promotional civil service exam, no salary increases after two years (but it's only with this civil service title, not sure about others), retirement benefits not attractive (we have to be 67 to retire), some coworkers are very childish...you learn to turn a deaf ear. I really only stay for the job security and benefits but if I get another offer from private, I may consider...since I cannot survive on this salary.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Respect the staff and offer a smile or a pat on a back for excellent work, not reward us with more work. Offer more promotions (not based on civil service exams). INCREASE THE SALARY...PLEASE

I have been working at City of New York

    Pros

I loved the opportunity to serve NYC and work aside people who value their roles in government. The Mayor's Office as a whole goes out of their way to ensure that Interns are treated with respect and do meaningful work way beyond the norm. There was also an emphasis on career development meetings and discussions on furthering our careers beyond our time there.

    Cons

None that I can think of.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep doing a great job!

I have been working at City of New York

    Pros

.....a bit of learning, especially if you're involved on projects

    Cons

The city is interesting in that the ppl that work for it are not bright to hold certain positions. An abundant number of chiefs, but not many Indians. Ppl are given positions for the sake of exam or who they know but not because they're capable. A lot of pettiness, ALOT!! People will come home with their personal issues carry their day at work that way...and expect you to deal with it . Especially "managers" and "directors" who cannot manage or direct their own households. Most of the processes and methodologies stink big time, most ppl or managers are not coherent or smart enough to hold their positions . Makes you wonder how they got them. Most cannot articulate themselves properly. And love installing fear on their employees. Is practically a high school setting with the gossip that goes on. ...I can go on and on...lol
