I have been working at City of Newport Beach California full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

We will start with the benefits. Newport provides great medical, dental, and vision options to their employees. You have access to the pension plan. You get to work a 9/80 schedule, you are located in the heart of Newport Beach and get to enjoy the ocean breeze and perfect weather every day.

    Cons

There is a lot of uncertainty about peoples positions and salaries. The HR staff is very closed off from the rest of the employees making it hard to voice concerns and receive answers.

    Pros

Staff is very easy to work with and the location is great. They also have a 9/80 work shift, so you have a three day weekend twice monthly.

    Cons

Typically, the residents of Newport Beach are snobby and feel entitled because of their zip code and annual income. UGHH!!!!!

    Advice to Management

Thank you for not micro managing. They actually let staff do their job!!!! I know that it's a novel idea, but it works. Take note!!!

Great environment, fun people, fun job. Overall great experience for all employees as well as customers. Great pay and rewards

    Cons

Some of the everyday tasks can be annoying, at times lifeguarding can be overwhelming. Boss was on a bit of a power trip at the time

    Advice to Management

    Listen to employees

    Pros

Security, benefits and positive working environment make the City a confortable place to work. Exposure to a wide variety of "big city" issues and enough independence to pursue them distinguishes this city. Opportunity for advancement, if you're patient.

    Cons

Innovative relative to many other local government agencies in Callifornia, not the most innovative environment relative to the private sector. Political priorities too often reign over satisfying core responsibilities.

    Advice to Management

Administration is responsible for running interference on the politics that reduce staff's productivity and too few take their responsibility seriously, deferring to midmanagement to run interference. Step up.

  6. Big organization, not much focus on efficiency.

    Pros

Location, people, org culture, the beach

    Cons

Size of org, lack of career building opportunities, lack of focus on efficiency

    Advice to Management

Recognize and reward your talented staff, don't think that department managers will make good decisions

    Pros

Beautiful city to work in. The people who live there are generally supportive of city government and public safety. It will always be an affluent area.

    Cons

Employees are not always treated well or fairly by managent. There is a lot of back stabbing by other employees for promotional opportunities.
