I have been working at City of Orlando full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The city you serve is beautiful. Shifts are 24-on 48-off. Dept. is large enough for promotions. Pay is reasonable for the area.

    Cons

Might get stuck in a bus for a year to 18 month. Might have to put up with older set mentalities where senior guys might not like change.

    Advice to Management

To the management I would say they are the one responsible for the culture within the department. so, motivating those around you to progress in there field of practice, ie, medics and firefighters. To seek more advancement within their career.

I have been working at City of Orlando as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The absolute best thing about working for the City is that you get recognize that you "WORK" for the City of Orlando.

    Cons

The main Challenge for me personally, it's hard to get ahead because of personal feelings toward individuals. Too many "cliques". I feel as though certain people in HR are looking for friends to move ahead in the career advancement and not very good candidates. There needs to be some shuffling around and some new eager leadership roles should be in place to make it a truly an Equal Opportunity work environment.

    Advice to Management

Stop having "Tunnel Vision". You may have gems right under your noses that's ready for a chance to prove themselves worthy.

I worked at City of Orlando full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, competitive salary and some opportunity to move.

    Cons

they may freeze your promotions for years. The government mentality could be challenging for someone coming from the private sector because it moves very slow and every change requires an act of heaven but if stability is what you are looking this is the place.

    Advice to Management

    Be sensitive to employers needs

    Pros

Great place to learn the art of communication, and to become comfortable and confident in managing people, and public

    Cons

Political savy is a must for survival. Its all about who you know. Innovation is not often rewarded. Riddled with pettiness and lacking conviavility.

    Advice to Management

Implement a performance bonus structure More effort into education
