I have been working at City of Ottawa

    Pros

Great place to work if you are ambitious. You can climb up the ladder very quickly. Responsibilities are large due to the growing need. Exposure to many different types of engineering. Flexible work arrangement is very nice.

    Cons

Expectation to work more than what is paid for. Pay is substantially lower than industry. Career progression is based on years of service or years experience rather than value added.

I worked at City of Ottawa as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

The people are really nice and friendly. Socializing and making friends is encouraged. The hours are very reasonable and flexible; they were very easy going about time off for vacation, illness, personal reasons, etc. The pay is decent, but not great.

    Cons

Sometimes the work is not very interesting, at times repetitive and boring. There was a small gym on-site at my location and you could join for a very low fee.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A better system for managing downtime is needed.

I have been working at City of Ottawa part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great salary and good hours for a student. The job was simple enough and they provided many training opportunities.

    Cons

Poisonous work environments can often persist develop because of a lack of leadership or disconnect because full time day workers and part time evening-night workers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better communication between all ranks of PBGOM within a building would improve the morale, and therefore work output.

I have been working at City of Ottawa part-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

The people I work with are amazing, they're creative, enthusiastic, energetic, and dedicated. It is an honour and privilege to work alongside them and as their supervisor. They are the only reason I keep working at the City.

    Cons

They do not care about the people on the frontlines, they are all about budget and protecting upper management. To the City of Ottawa, "accountability" means holding frontline staff responsible for all the irresponsible decisions or lack of action taken by upper management.

No insurance / benefits for most positions, and you are kept at 24-32h a week so that you are not considered a full time staff member. Even if you've been there for more than 10 years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Care for and respect your employees and you wouldn't have such a disastrous turnover rate and disgracefully low job satisfaction rating for frontline staff. This would save you a LOT of money on training and then we could afford equipment for our programming, especially for underprivileged families who rely on us.

I have been working at City of Ottawa as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Relaxing job, good work-home balance. Learnt a lot about construction. Good job security, they offered me a job the following summer but I turned it down. Decent pay for a student. Overall, good intro to construction and engineering for students.

    Cons

Boss was grumpy old guy ready to retire although his job was kind of redundant in first place. Very angry towards upper management. Might have just been the type of guy he was.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Inspectors and students need field offices to keep sane.

I have been working at City of Ottawa full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Many nice coworkers but not all of them. Friendly and cordial for the most part. Great benefits and company pension. Some excellent supervisors and managers but not all. Managers are overall better than many found at the Federal level.

    Cons

If you are not related to a current employee, forget about ever working there. I got in via a friend. I won't lie. Offices are staffed by brothers, sisters, daughters, nieces and nephews of many mangers. Very cliquish environment. If you don't fit in with a group you'll be ostracized. Too many coworkers, including management are romantically involved. Talent and knowledge are not at all relevant. It truly is who you know. Promotion is too seniority based. Ageist employer. New employees are all very young. If you are over 25 and want to get in, forget it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop with the nepotism. It's disgraceful.
