ProsMost of the staff is knowledgeable and friendly. The employees are like family. The facility is brand new and a beautiful place to work.

ConsThere can be a lot of politics at times. You can also feel there isn't a lot of information sharing.

ProsThe City has always took pride in the fact that they have never layed any one off.
If a business case can be provided for a new product or service management will usually support it.

ConsThere are 4 IT departments within the City and all of them have very differnent vision.
The main IT department seems to perfer paying contractors to do all the work for projects instead of promoting internal knowledge.

The other 3 are for public safety and most work is handled in house with very little contracting.

This seems to create Silo's and tends to complicate interoperability
.

Also the City has had to cut back benefits and raises over the past few years due to the economy.

Also there are alot of inter departmental politics in every department I have dealt with.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement needs to take a closer look at the effects of their decisions on the workers. Most decisions that are made usually have some unforeseen negative effect on the workers. Please consider discussing major changes with all levels of employees

Former Employee – worked at City of Raleigh

ProsLots of training opportunities
Flextime
Good IT support
Good benefits
Grant funding
Opportunity to shift to other positions within the City

ConsRewards those who work the system
Drama, brown-nosing
Not always the most qualified people, but about who is friends with who/ political affiliations

Advice to Senior ManagementIt is more than just who you know. Try to hire qualified people with an interest and passion for what they do. Punish gossiping and office politics and reward those who are inclusive and good leaders.

Former Employee – worked at City of Raleigh full-time for more than 3 years

ProsThe City of Raleigh is a forward-looking municipality in one of the fastest growing regions of the nation, but still has a family atmosphere. People get to know you and you get to know them, and the highest ranking team members always remember your name.

ConsAs with any government agency, budget rules. There is little flexibility in responding to changing realities, especially in the IT realm, where the threat landscape sometimes changes completely day to day. Sometimes paperwork seems to take more effort than it is worth.

Advice to Senior ManagementA more flexible quarterly budget process would help departments flexibly plan projects that react to real needs
