I worked at City of Reno full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good people to work with, I was allowed to essentially supervise myself within reason. Four 10 hour days, great benefits.

    Cons

When the economy tanked, a lot of us were laid off.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of seniority rules. Seniority should count for something but not everything. People were kept that were fantastically lazy while a lot of us that were honest and hard working got the ax.

I worked at City of Reno full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Job security with seniority; good pay and benefits; different variety of jobs

    Cons

Nepotism exists. Some are promoted on who they know, not on their experience or ability to do the job. Decisions are made based on personality, not skills. Huge lack of communication between upper management's wants and the actual job accomplished, which in turn wastes money because jobs have to be repeated.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Everyone should be treated equally and based on how the job is done, not because they are the best friend of the manager.

I worked at City of Reno

    Pros

The benefits were excellent while working at the City.

    Cons

The problems with the budget made the job very stressful since everyone is always wondering about lay offs.

I worked at City of Reno

    Pros

It was a nice and cush governement job. All the unpaid time off you could want

    Cons

It seemed some people were waiting to die.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would recommend they pay higher wages and stop trying to restructure departments. They move departments under other departments and it messes up everyones job. The result is negative productivity because new management has no idea how things were operating and is trying to come in and put their own print on the new structure. They just end up pissing people off.

  8.

"management" would just as soon subcontract out all work to avoid negotiating with bargaining units.

I have been working at City of Reno

    Pros

the pay was above average and benefits were great

    Cons

it seemed like everyone was continually wishing it was Friday or the next holiday.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

seems to be a general pattern - the antithesis of "in search of excellence".
Reno could be a model to use to illustrate how not to lead and manage a
city. small thinking, always comparing efforts to other local govt instead of
real progressive organizations. blow it up and start over with some personalities
that are genuine instead of "what's in it for me ? "
