I worked at City of Vancouver

    Pros

    Flexible hours.
    Great pay.
    Its rewarding teaching swimming lessons.

    Cons

    Bureaucratic.
Hours are based on seniority. So you could be a fantastic, knowledgable, and fit lifeguard and get no hours, and someone could be a lazy, unfit and unmotivated lifeguard getting all the hours.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Think of a more fair system to distribute hours.

I worked at City of Vancouver

    Pros

    - Health and dental benefits, employee savings plan
    - Work-life balance (earned days off, on-site fitness classes at City Hall)

    Cons

    - Poor leadership in some of the professional departments means great people leave while mediocrity is encouraged
    - No extended sick leave in case of serious illness (expected to use sick days)
    - Difficult to transition from contract to permanent status

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you want to actually hang on to the best and brightest, encourage excellence and promotion from within, and give greater recognition to job candidates who have worked on contract with the city. Extinguish the "mean girls" behaviour in some departments.
