I have been working at City of Winston-Salem

    Pros

School system - time off, including summers. Relatively easy job, very policy driven so not much autonomy which means not much responsibility that isn't shared with supervisory roles.

    Cons

Policy driven which means not much room for creativity or personal growth. Pay is very low.

I worked at City of Winston-Salem full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Coworkers, some of the best people I have ever worked with.
Training, the city departments I was involved with provided all training.

    Cons

Insurance costs have out paced pay increases. The increases in insurance lead to me losing money every year. Even with raises.
While claiming to promote from within there is very little of that done.
Good old boy network is in full effect.

I have been working at City of Winston-Salem full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

job stability, co-workers, interactions with citizens. It is a great place to work if you take pride in what you do even though management and the city will not recognize it or reward it.

    Cons

low pay, increasing benefit costs, zero promotional opportunities, low moral, high turnover. It seems like we train employees until they know enough that they can take a better paying job in High Point, Greensboro, etc. Council and HR refuse to give real increases because they don't want to raise taxes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize and reward your employees. We work hard everyday no matter what the weather is.
