I have been working at Clariant (North Carolina) as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

This is a company that has extraordinary benefits for full time employees; this includes 26 weeks of paid FMLA.

    Cons

As a contract employee it is difficult to get your invoices paid on any regular basis.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would like to see more consistency in what leadership expects of you. Senior management in the different departments don't have the same goals for the same expectations. If you work in the health department the medical goals may be completely opposite of another department's goal (like safety), but both expect you to fully reach their goals. Like the medical department saying the nurses cannot help the contract employees because of malpractice insurance coverage. The ESHA department expects you to treat contract and full time employees the same. You can't do both.

I have been working at Clariant (North Carolina) full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Benefits are decent - med, vision, dental, 401K contributions, pension contributions
    Not a structured work environment
Easy to gain visibility if you are good at your job

    Cons

    Executive management - tyrant/oppressor approach
Mid-level management - lacks managerial skills, can't relate to employees, look out for themselves even if that means blaming others
The politics both regional and Global will have you running for the hills
Promotions & salary increases - non existent unless you are favored by your direct management in which case possibilities are endless.
    Depressing place to work
    Does not treat employees equally
HR has no power to effect any change against tyrant management

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees, invest in them and their career growth.
Have proper mid and executive management in place
Engage your employees and foster positive work culture and relationships

I worked at Clariant (North Carolina) as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

Very little was expected from me. The compensation was good. They have quality facilities and research capabilities.

    Cons

It felt like every question and suggestion I posed to further the experimental science was viewed as though I was questioning the supervisor's and the management's authority. My time was not effectively managed. They discouraged me from being proactive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please take some management and communication courses to learn to be better managers and learn to better communicate with your subordinates. Learn to be better at teamwork and cooperate with other co-workers.

    Pros

Teamwork oriented, health benefits, Competent people, most are easy to work with.

    Cons

From my perspective this business, managed out of Switzerland, is bottom line driven, with frantic deadlines. They appear to be headcount focused, resulting in tremendous workload for remaining employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember your people can burn out under impractical workloads. Be cautious when evaluating headcount reductions.

I worked at Clariant (North Carolina) full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

teamwork driven, project driven, management driven, salaries, benefits, training, travel perks

    Cons

dysfunctional work relationships between some folks can get out of hand because of blame focus and whether or not you "like" someone or not, the work can get lost

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on the work and not on individual differences, corporate management should engage more with senior level managers to help solve problems, too much lean leads to work not being done that should probably be done, employees are already working nights and weekends, is it wise for sales people and managers to do so much of their own expense reporting versus calling on and following up with customers???

Opportunities for growth and training if you put forth the effort.

    Cons

Doesn't know how to keep good employees happy. The good employees are leaving. It used to be a good long term company to work for. Short term goals are destroying the organization.

    Pros

I've worked some places where the company could care less about what's going on with personally. The people here really care about one another. Very family oriented.

    Cons

It is still corporate America, so you still have your red tape to muddle through. You still have your favorites who will be allowed to shine more than others. The good 'ol boy network".
