I worked at Clarion University part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Excellent environment for students to work while taking classes. Boss worked around my class schedule and if I finished tasks early I could work on my homework.

    Cons

Was only able to hold position thru sophomore year.

I have been working at Clarion University part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

First of all, working in a college setting is a wonderful experience and working in the charming, small town of Clarion is no different. The students are mostly very pleasant and work hard, depending on the class.

    Cons

While the atmosphere and the resources we are giving are more than enough, the blight of numerous administrations and red tape is so evident and omnipresent it is difficult to get anything done. There can almost never be any bargaining about extra hours or wages due to the fact that they strive not to provide health care. I have been told on more than one occasion that budget money "disappears" which leads me to question who I could trust--my director or the administration.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You have to start offering more full-time positions instead of completely relying on adjuncts to stay forever. The turnover rates are phenomenal. I would also suggest not being so secretive, but other than that, Clarion University really is a nice place to work.

I have been working at Clarion University part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Clarion is a growing campus and so there are a lot of positions opening up across campus in different departments.

    Cons

The administration and red tape is unbearable. You might have a boss that listens to you but then turns around and says there is little to nothing they can do about your predicament. Money also tends to "disappear" from budgets, which is frustrating considering some departments are under staffed and have a enormous turnover rate, which is bad for programs and also for reputation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire full-time. Also make sure you meet with your staff often (and not through only group meetings) and also try to be sympathetic to the cause of the adjuncts and miscellaneous staff that you hire.

I have been working at Clarion University

    Pros

Sensible people; friendly environment, good benefits, good community, breath taking fall foliage, safe location, reasonable cost of living, has a hospital right in town.

    Cons

Hard to advance because while the student population is increasing, the job growth lags. Winters are very cold, many cloudy days, takes two hours to get to Pittsburgh for better shopping than local

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You are doing a good job and we appreciate your efforts. Keep our concerns in front of the government in Harrisburg!

I have been working at Clarion University

    Pros

Have only worked as a tutor, so I do not know anything about benefits packages. However:

My skills in my major have been greatly sharpened by helping others understand the material.
    They have direct deposit.

    Cons

The pay is minimum wage for tutoring. If you have an appointment and the tutee does not show, you will only receive pay for 15 minutes (Making a paycheck unreliable and pittly.)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase the budget of the academic enrichment department so that they are able to pay tutors more. Underpayed = Underproducers
