    - Your work long hours and you are pushed to the limit
    - Very conservative in utilizing new technologies
    - No consistency on how to run work between the regions

    Summer Intern Review

    Project Management Intern (Former Employee)
    Washington, DC

ProsGot to have large roles of responsibility. They pay well for an internship and treat us well with a couple happy hour events.

ConsExperience dependent on job site assigned. Much more rewarding to be part of structural construction than close-out.

    Good company

    Project Manager (Current Employee)
    Washington, DC

ProsThey're the largest GC in the DC area and build the largest and most interesting projects around. You can get exposure to a lot of different aspects of the business if you make an attempt to learn. Good job security...only 1 round of big layoffs since the recession, others have been here and there.

ConsCompared to other companies, fairly weak pay and bonus packages. Bonuses are tied to jobs, and some won't reach you for 2-3 years. If you have a good boss they will take care of you at the main office. Many youngsters with 3-5 years in leave for more money and responsibility. Also a very top heavy company, to many meetings with 5 VP's who all have great ideas but depend on the guys at the lower ends of the food chain to do the work.....takes away some of the development opportunities for young managers to take the lead. The 10 days/year of vacation for the first 5 years is weak.

Advice to Senior ManagementI think that better career development plans need to be established. It is so very dependent on who you are fortunate enough to work for and what exposure they give you. Good people get bounced around a lot, especially to some of the large federal jobs that are great for the company but not a lot of fun for your employees. Something outside of the yearly performance review is needed. Also, combine time off and sick to one PTO bank..maybe have 20 days after 3 years???

    Nice try...

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Washington, DC

ProsOne of the biggest general contracting firms in the country -- and easily in the Mid-Atlantic. Many intelligent people work here with lots of experience. Good place to get your feet wet in construction.

ConsNo regard for the employee and all about the business. It's understood to get the work done, but there are several other ways to handle scenarios and issues in lieu of what was done. Bureaucratic -- probably because of its large size. Almost no chance to to progress in your career if you are dealt the wrong hand in senior management. Some play favorites and really take care of employees -- others act like employees do not exist.

Advice to Senior ManagementPete and the extreme senior management is fine and seem to care. It's that lower tier of senior managers that need to wake up.

Great place to start your career.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Los Angeles, CA

ProsOpportunity to learn a lot, very fast. Apparent that there is plenty of upside for your career. Large diverse company with something for everyone.

ConsNo matter how capable or smart you may be you still need to put your time in to prove yourself to upper management. Learn the ropes. Recognizing advanced degrees for entry level positions not the best.

    Great opportunity for hard workers!

    Project Engineer (Current Employee)
    Bethesda, MD

ProsOpportunities to grow and learn within Clark are always available to those who show a desire to work hard and succeed. Limits to success are only what you make them!

ConsGetting time off can be hard or frowned-upon, depending on your boss. Some bosses view time off as a lack of commitment to your job.

Advice to Senior ManagementClark should work on encouraging a better work-life balance. Your worth is not based on how many hours you spend in the office, rather the quality and consistency of your work!!

My employment at Clark Construction has provided great opportunities to develop a strong foundation for my future career

    Office Engineer (Current Employee)
    Oakland, CA

ProsClark Construction provides a family atmosphere where you feel like more than just a number in the organization on the West Coast. There is ample opportunity for you to make yourself stand out and take your career in the direction that you desire.

ConsWith construction, there is always the relocation to new projects that comes into play. At these times, it seems that the company waits until the last minute to notify employees of future assignments. This could lead to personal problems in employee's personal lives and ultimately cause a turnover problem in the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementCommunication up and down the chain of command in the company could be improved, in terms of communication from the employees in the field up to the upper management in the regional office. This especially goes for potential future assignments that the employee could be assigned to.

    A Worthy Job.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Fort Benning, GA

ProsAlthough an arduous process, the end results remain tangible and impressive. Much good comes from the efforts of many.

ConsManagement does a poor job of actually managing its people. Those in the office do not have a good complrehension of what occurs in the field. Field personnel are often not on thier sites managing their jobs. If superintendents had to punch a time clock, they'd be broke!

Advice to Senior ManagementThose who are not productive, are counterproductive. Reward those who actually drive and grow the business. Hint: it's not always the 6-figure employee.

    Positive, learned a good deal

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Washington, DC

ProsThe quality of experiences gained is strong. The exposure is strong. The projects are often complex and interesting

ConsThere are those that the company is pleased to have on board, and those that the company is really pleased to have on board. It's a bit tricky there. Also, the company is a bit tricky when it comes to bonuses. Verbal compiments are given for strong work, but very little actions that require Clark to impart costs on behalf of an employee are taken. Never free lunches, etc. Never compensation for working Saturdays. Thank you's sure-- lots of thsoe, but thank you's are easy for managers. The thing with most companies that is tricky is work is a business. If the company makes money on a strong employee great, but those that are making the company money in little ways, like working on a weekend aren't reimbursed adequately for the effort.

Advice to Senior Managementobserving the new hires was always interesting. It seems as though they're the ones that give the most. I guess that's likely of all companies. Maybe, do more to reimburse those folks.
