I have been working at Clark County School District full-time

    Pros

It is a great place to work when you need to have flexability, because you can work as much or as little as you need. You can choose the schools that you want to go to. The staff at the schools are very helpful and welcoming.

    Cons

The downside of the jobs are the pay is very low, especially for long term substitutes 100 per day regular (90 if it's a top school) and long term subs only make 110 a day after the first 3 weeks. There are no benefits and even though there is no work in the summer, there is no eligibility for unemployment inthose summer months.

    Advice to Management

Since the district is so short handed, offer more incentive for substitutes.

    Pros

If you teach in a high needs area (Special Ed, Math, Science), you WILL be hired. I had taught and trained all over the district; some areas/schools are better then others. I personally prefer teaching and working at the "tougher," more at-risk schools. I find the admins more supportive, the parents more appreciative, and the students more willing to learn. Our wonderful CCEA Healthtrust will most likely be bankrupt by November and it's a crapshoot what Insurance will replace it.

    Cons

Our state does not support public education and our governor just passed an unfunded mandate allowing parents to request $5,000 for private school voucher, if they want. How our already, poorly funded, huge, school district is going to afford to do this AND service well over 300,000 students is a mystery to me.

    Advice to Management

The best advice I ever received was from one of my principal's. She said, "If you always think of the students first and advocate for the students, you'll never get into trouble". I would tell Admins to be more supportive of their teachers when dealing with conflicts, instead of knee-jerking, as some have done in my experience.

    Pros

The kids who truly care about you and need your support

    Cons

No consistency. Every school is different. No curriculum at some schools- you have to make your own books. Things always change. Children with special needs slip through the cracks. Students suffer from lack of assistance. They treat teachers with little respect. Often times they can't find subs for classes so they split up classes and you have to take other teachers' students. Some teachers lack professionalism. Tattoos and bad attitudes. Most stressful job ever. Admin and zone admin completely out of touch with what happens in the classroom. Now we have pay freezes and our health insurance is going up. It just gets worse and worse.

    Advice to Management

Nothing I can say because they simply are too big to fail and they don't care.

    Pros

    Apparent opportunities within the district.

    Cons

It is overall too political to benefit the students. High demands are made on teachers without supplying them with the materials, textbooks, and other necessary supplies.

    Advice to Management

Stop changing curricular ideas every 2-3 years. Let the students be taught from a stable curriculum so they can build upon their knowledge. Changing the skill set every few years is not in the best interest of the students. Treat teachers like professionals, and you will see results.
