I worked at Clark Nexsen Architecture full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Clark Nexsen offers many awesome perquisites that can be enticing to those new to the workforce or even those folks who are retired from the military (there are many in the Hampton Roads area). The company offers great pay (very consistent with the industry averages), amazing health benefits (especially if you are single, you pretty much pay nothing for health insurance and very little for dental), they offer a match for your 401k, and you have plenty of access to professional organizations, conferences, and events (all of which are usually paid for or reimbursed by the company).

    Cons

Although the company does provide great perks and benefits, there is definitely a down side if you are not a licensed professional architect or engineer. There are little to no opportunities for advancement if you are in an administrative role (ie marketing, accounting, project management assistance).

The company has suffered in recent years due to a few hardships, but it seems as if Clark Nexsen has bounced back after a couple rounds of "right sizing", ie layoffs. There is definitely a "silo" effect between the office locations, which more often than not operated as if they were separate companies. There was also a disconnect between the project teams and the marketing department, which was very unfortunate as the marketing department has the arduous task of writing proposals directly to client in order to bring work to the company.

There is also no contracts department at the company, which was pretty odd considering contracts and addendums to these documents are pretty major.

A solid Regional Architecture and Engineering Company

    Pros

They have a proven record of possessing a diversified range of services. This has allowed them to stay in business during the great recession. They held onto several employees longer than most corporations would have without revenue to support them which is admiral. They offer summer hours which is a very very nice benefit.

    Cons

Lack of vision and plan for growth beyond regional status. They spend too much money on "corporate culture" items that could be used for salaries. That is always a hard line to walk. They recently moved into a very expensive rent area, possibly at the expense of jobs?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Expand the vacation beyond two weeks for the first five years.

I have been working at Clark Nexsen Architecture

    Pros

Clark Nexsen is one of the better architecture and engineering firms to work for. They try very hard to provide a quality product, and there is a wide diversity of project types.

    Cons

Management is obsessed with utilization and working long hours and at the same time obsessed with internal social media software. They are trying to be cool but not necessarily succeeding. Like a lot of companies the yes-people advance the most.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be honest to employees. Don't promote the squeakiest wheels. Show some leadership when there are internal problems - don't just ignore them. Think about the consequences of nepotism.

    Pros

Friendly environment, beautiful office, lots of opportunity for continuing education during lunches, paid overtime

    Cons

Boss oversells in terms of time it will take to do the project and expects employees work to get it done, lots of university housing work - kind of cookie cutter, project managers had a superiority complex and were quick to throw co-workers under the bus

"Best Place to Work in Hampton Roads", by Inside Business magazine

I have been working at Clark Nexsen Architecture

    Pros

Clark Nexsen has given me the best opportunity for both personal and professional growth. I left the firm that I had been with for 15 years because they did not offer the upward growth paths that Clark Nexsen offered, and more importantly, they delivered. I have been here for over 10 years now, and could not imagine working anywhere else. The diverse projects, the talented staff and co-workers, is what gets me up in the morning! Growth and promotion is not going to be just handed to you, and it doesn't make any difference how long you have been here, if you work hard, you will be rewarded. The benefits are better than almost all of the competitors, and in good years, management bonuses back the profits to ALL the employees. Clark Nexsen does more for its employees than any other A/E I know. Recently, they were selected as the "Best Place to Work in Hampton Roads", by Inside Business magazine.

    Cons

Would be great if there were more opportunties to "tele-commute", but in our industry it just doesn't seem to be realistic. The types of projects may seem mundane to some, but they pay the bills, and afford the opportunity to work on some great projects when they come along.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create a "management" blog, and use this to convey weekly information to the employees. Company does have a weekly all hands Monday morning meeting, but attendance is not mandatory and when information is shared, many employees are missed becuase they chose not to attend the weekly meeting.
