Learned A Lot But Hard To Advance in a Tightknit Fraternity Environment

Senior Account Executive (Former Employee)
Los Angeles, CA

I worked at Clear Channel for more than 8 years

ProsGetting to work with great station managers and working with amazing co-workers in offices across the country

Conshard to advance if you don't come out of the New York corporate office. Competency is irrelevant the person from NY will fill management openings

Advice to Senior ManagementPlace more value on your employees. Pay them fairly for all the extra hours the AE's devote to your bottom line. AE's shouldn't have to find another job and file their letter of resignation in order to receive a pay raise. Also not classy for the GSM & President to drop the F'bomb on an employee upon their resignation because they leave for a competitor.

The foremost broadcasting/media/entertainment company in America.

News Anchor/Reporter (Current Employee)
Los Angeles, CA

I have been working at Clear Channel part-time for more than 10 years

ProsAt least in the major markets, you always get to work with super professionals and top-of-the-line equipment at their broadcast properties.

ConsSometimes people get lost in big corporations, and too many people get let go when cost-cutting time rolls around.

Advice to Senior ManagementSome talk show hosts are way overpaid, and money could be better used to save dozens of other jobs.

If you have no where else to work, work here

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Aliso Viejo, CA

I worked at Clear Channel

Prosenterprise level benefits such as computing, email, resources, etc
ability to work across other company entities
travel
training
advancement opportunites were not too bad for this office

ConsPassing off health care costs while paying dividends to shareholders lacks class
Clearly a company for the Mays family to siphon profits
At its heart its a sales company, not a radio company
Outmoded model for making sales as no one want to listen to the radio anymore
Check your values at the door, they don't apply here
They don't appreciate different points of view
They like to fire people at whim and don't value the employee, hence the advancement opportunities in the pros section
Pay is low across the entire company

Advice to Senior ManagementTo make more money, create different lines of revenue
No one wants to listen to stale radio anymore

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend

Steady job, just don't expect great things

Director (Former Employee)
Los Angeles, CA

I worked at Clear Channel

ProsExperience in every job I've had really depends on my immediate supervisor and I was fortunate in this company to work for a great manager who understood how to balance work/life and reward innovation.

ConsThe top management of the company, however, is very much stuck in a business model that's a good 15 years old. Not a bad experience overall; just don't expect it to get you anywhere and don't expect to be doing anything new or innovative.

Advice to Senior ManagementRecognize there's a whole new world order in media and adjust your lens a little wider. It's not about selling radio advertising anymore. Pick up a copy of Fast Company Magazine and catch up to how people are consuming media today and will be soon and get ahead of the trends.

Don't waste your time by thinking a job here would be worthwhile.

Traffic Supervisor (Current Employee)
Los Angeles, CA

I have been working at Clear Channel

ProsVery Few. The money is OK, but that's because I have a contract and a good lawyer.

ConsNO recognition, NO leadership, NO appreciation, Employees are pitted against each other, benefits fade consistently, good people are laid off while mediocre people are retained. No incentive to do our best. Just marking time until something better comes along.

Advice to Senior ManagementAppreciate your people. Stop firing the best (they make the most money, so cost-cutting takes a huge leap when the most expensive get axed.) Most importantly, the top level of management has NO idea how to run the business.
