    Pros

Great community, strong tech team. The Clearwell office was a really fun place to work. There were interesting technical problems, and a good mix of senior and junior engineers. There were a lot of opportunities for advancing your career.

    Cons

Got bought by Symantec. Acquisition process was not much fun.

    Pros

It was clear that the upper management really listened to the feedback from all employees, despite rank or title. The executives were kind & sincere. They were quick to offer praise when due.

    Cons

There was zero work life balance. No matter what your position, you were expected to be available 24/7 even after the "start up" phase.

    Pros

    1. You can learn about electronic discovery
    2. Can learn building enterprise application using Java coding
    3. You can learn about challenges of processing large amounts of data

    Cons

    1. Many new engineers who do not know the product.
    2. The erlier engineers appear to have "checked out" after making millions on the acquisition
    3. Many integration challenges with Symantec, slowing everything down.
    4. Management generally trends to avoid risk, so you'll be working with old code with not much scope to improve or innovate.

    Advice to Management

Be honest with your employees - many engineers joined with the promise of a startup, and hyping the company as an IPO candidate and then sell out six weeks later leaves a bitter taste on all those who believed. The CEO is very untrustworthy and has no integrity. Go back to the basics and understand what made you get to where you were.

  6. Helpful (1)

The management team was greedy and sold itself and the employee short.

    Pros

    - Weekly All-hands meetings to motivate employees
    - Free lunches
    - Good, solid VC's backing
    - Good founder with high level of integrity

    Cons

Untrustworthy CEO and executive staff. Only after the company was sold to Symantec that I learned it was the CEO's career pattern to sell employees on long-term vision, but the moment a semi-attractive offer comes along, he sold out. This was a similar pattern with his previous company.

    Advice to Management

Be honest with your employees - operate with integrity, please!

    Pros

The people are bright and motivated, and the product is the best in an emerging market. Attention is paid to employees at a high level.

    Cons

Recent growth has identified management problems. Different departments aren't communicating, and basic expectations aren't being defined, which leads to finger pointing and playing the blame game.

    Advice to Management

Slow down, stop assuming you know everything, and actually take some management classes. Otherwise you're going to lose some senior people that you don't want to lose.

    Pros

The product vision is sharp and aimed right where the money is. There's never any doubt where the product is going and who it's for. Regular meetings keep staff informed of both project and corporate status. Pay and benefits are typical.

    Cons

The underlying technology is a Windows desktop application. The drive to build this into a large distributed server cluster lacks an understanding of servers and server development environments. Engineering is mostly new junior-level hires that lack the courage and experience needed to challenge the status quo.

    Advice to Management

Hire Senior Software Architects now! Hard work, carefully analyzed plans, and technical reviews aren't good enough. Evolving into a server cluster is a slow and painful process; slower than where the product needs to be in the future. What's needed is a leap into a new design, and that leap can only happen with direction from top technical talent.

    Pros

Clearwell Systems is a market leader in an emerging space called electronic discovery. Being a leader, they will have great growth and will likely dominate. If you want to learn about this area, and want to build your carreer, this company would be a good one.

    Cons

The company can be a difficult place to work on account of "cultural fit". You may find that you need to be an outgoing, social person, yet doesn't ask tough questions. Especially troublesome would be if you ask your boss a tough question - he/she will get defensive. You'll also be shocked when you get your annual performance review. Even if you put in extra-ordinary effort and everything looks great, when it comes to review, you'll likely be surprised that others who were more of a cultural fit get better reviews, better raises and promotions.

    Advice to Management

Management ignores bad news. Especially senior leaders exhibit a "I know it all, who are you to suggest an idea mentality"

    Pros

Clearwell (now part of Symantec) was a great startup with some of the most talented folks in "Silly Valley." As a startup they were attuned to their industry (which evolved over time) and as a result were able to deliver a quality product to their customers.

    Cons

They had a touchy feely corporate culture that was constantly asking whether they should be a "Team" or a "Family" (I often reccomended trying to be a "Business") that sometimes robbed them of productivity.

    Advice to Management

Try not to go the way of Metalincs and Kazeon within the new Symantec structure.
