I have been working at Cliffs Natural Resources (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Culture of teamwork and you really get the feeling you are on a team. Things have been shaky lately, but new corporate management seems determined to stabilize the company. Great compensation and benefits too.

    Cons

Most of the sites are in smaller towns/remote. Middle management has been in a constant flux.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

Pay was decent and people really cared about their jobs.

    Cons

Stock price has crashed. They put in a new CEO but can he salvage the stock for those of us that have a ton of stock and have lost most of our life savings?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Wrap coal assets into an MLP, idle Bloom Lake or sell it but don't just write it off and take a monster charge. Spinoff your international assets into CLF International. Give the spinoff as a distribution to shareholders. Once coal assets are in an MLP, boost dividend. Do whatever it takes to get the stock price up.

I have been working at Cliffs Natural Resources

    Pros

Benefits are good, however, the medical benefits have been Obamacized. There are many excellent people to work with and for.

    Cons

Upper management has no clue what people who are not located in Cleveland do for the core business. There is also a huge question of integrity and ethics among some of the newer upper management appointees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get out and learn about your company and the people. You can't solve problems from an office chair. Quit trying to cut costs and people and get out and see how the mines can be more profitable.

    Pros

The company provides good pay and benefits with room to grow if that is desired. Good people to work with. Safety is always stressed.

    Cons

The company had over-hired in the recent past and is now forced to make cuts.

    Pros

Cliffs pays very well and offers great opportunities to experience organizational resistance to improvement.

    Cons

The company suffers from constant chaos at the upper level and lack of consistent leadership. VP and Director level management suffer from gun slinging and silver bullet mentality. They are easily swayed by the latest improvement consultant and snake oil salesmen.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My advice to management is much can be had by creating organizational stability and looking in house for talent and solutions instead of out side to the latest friend of the VP.

    Pros

You know your schedule a year in advance, the benifit pkg is pretty good, and the people are alright to work with.

    Cons

To much drama, tattle tailing, sneaky crap. 12 hour schedule is hard to handle doing midnights and day shift in the same week every week.

    Pros

Go place to work but no stability if the job will be there now a days.

    Cons

No security. Company is in a dead spin and will most likely be taken over by Casablanca Capital.

    Pros

Over the past several years this has been a great place to work. However, with the recent changes in leadership the culture has changed.

    Cons

There are little to no advancement opportunities given current economics.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Balance between the short term requirements of the market and the long term overall health and success of the company.
