Advice to Senior Management
More transparency and communication
Pros
Location; caring senior leadership; role autonomy; can try new things; company does the right thing most of the time.
Cons
Average compensaion; not the best place for career advancement; director-jr vp management level way too political.
Advice to Senior Management
Maintain the caring attitude; better match salaries to job expectations; better develop the people management skills of the jr Veeps.
Pros
Work life balance
Half Day Fridays (during summer)
Great coworkers
Flexible schedule
Diverse product line, with well known brands
Bay Area
Cons
Very risk adverse. Difficult for Sr. Mgrs and Leadership teams to make decisions; therefore, the people working the projects consistently spend time over analyizing contingencies.
Very political.
One bad review can often limit someones career advancement potential.
Advice to Senior Management
We want to spend our time developing great products, not developing contingencies for every risk. I fully embrace risk management, but I think our leadership teams take it to extremes.
Pros
Great place to learn, can quite easily find a job after your stint here. Great name recognition, lots of opportunities to move up IF you fit the "Clorox" mold.
Cons
External hires will get significantly more than internal candidates. Up or out culture. Will make employees fit the bell curve, so not everyone can get a good rating. Very political. Work balance inequality amongst groups in functions.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to employee needs and stop trying to penny pinch everything. Need to embrace change and take risks instead of always trying to cover yourself.
Pros
Clorox is a very profitable, stable company, and is a good name to have on a resume. Clorox tries very hard to conduct business in an ethical manner. There are many opportunities for employees to work with the company in supporting local, national and international charities.
Cons
Women working in the Product Supply division (manufacturing, supply chain, distribution) will encounter a good ol' boy's club, with limited opportunities for advancement. And, plant experience is a must within Product Supply to be taken seriously. But the most challenging aspect of working at Clorox are the dysfunctional operations throughout the company. This is the result of constantly moving people around, so no one ever knows their job (in fact, employees talk about their current or next "assignment" -- rather than their "job" -- which conveys a short-term notion). You can go absolutely crazy trying to get the most simple piece of information!! Finally, Clorox Sr. Management thinks it's a lot more employee oriented than it actually is. For example, Clorox moved 60 jobs from Oakland to Atlanta in 2009. This was a heck of a time to force about 40 employees into unemployment, right at the peak of the depression/recession....in spite of the fact the Company was doing very well financially.
Advice to Senior Management
Do you have any idea how inefficient the company is? Yes the company is successful in spite of itself....but if the shareholders only knew how much company is wasted.....
Pros
The mid-level IT managers are thoroughly knowledgeable and they know what needs to be done.
Cons
The Senior IT Leadership is completely disconnected from their team and reality.
Advice to Senior Management
Remove a layer of upper IT Management and force the remaining layer to be a hands-on director.
Pros
Good work/life balance and good benefits
Solid company with longevity
Ample training and resources available
Nice co-workers
Convenient location (12th St BART Staion)
Cons
Extremely conservative
Pay is low for a major Bay Area corporation
Hard to advance unless you are political
Management is slow to make decision
The same people have been running Clorox for years and years and have trouble moving forward.
Advice to Senior Management
Senior management needs to engage and be sincere with employees at all levels. It's gotten better but still has a long way to go. Also, outsourcing jobs is not the answer. It may look good on paper, but it costs in knowledge, productivity and morale.
Pros
People are very friendly to work with.
Cons
Dynamic environment which can sometimnes put pressure on you.
Advice to Senior Management
International expansion a key for a great future which does not depend on only US market.
Pros
- Can have good work life balance depending on who your manager is
- Stable company
- Stable industry
- Very strong C level management team
- Colleagues for the most part are nice
Cons
- Pay is below market
- Depending on the department you are in, advancement opportunities may be little to none
- Easy to get pigeonholed in your job if you are not proactive in seeking new/increasing responsibilities
Advice to Senior Management
None so far. They are a cheap company, but it probably works for them because of the industry they are in.
Pros
Convenience - next to a Bart station
Good work-life balance although that may depend on your manager
Summer hours
Competitive pay
Cons
Conservative culture
Systems are slow and not up-to-date
Upward movement is promoted but not as easy to obtain
People can be clique-y
Advice to Senior Management
Focus on your people - very strong centennial goals however not as much emphasis on giving more to the people who are working for it
