Ineffective management takes club from five stars to two stars

I worked at Club One part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I was able to keep my job when club one took over managing our gym, but watching the gym go downhill made me want to quit.

    Cons

Poor management. Pay cuts. Cookie cutter policies that don't necessarily fit each club. Labor laws are ignored. Health and safety concerns are ignored. No HR department on site to resolve issues. Corporate bullying is not taken seriously. Complaints about management and workplace safety are not taken seriously. This may be one of the worst companies I have ever worked for. I will never work for another club one establishment, nor will I use facilities operated by Club One, knowing how they treat their clients and employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Having HR personnel on site would be a step in the right direction.

I have been working at Club One full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

They are doing their best in a tough market -- still shying away from the preditorial nature of some of the lower end gyms.

    Cons

Losing share to Fitness SF and other gyms. Changes in the personal training market has eroded Club One's margins.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider some creative ways to stay relevant without stretching the brand too thin or resorting to lowbrow tactics.

I worked at Club One full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Club One tends to promote from within, so if you are a hard-working, dedicated employee they recognize that and give you opportunities to expand your knowledge in the health and fitness industry. The company has been sold to it's original founders and is now called "Active Sports".

    Cons

Lack of communication from the corporate office made it difficult to feel supported.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate constantly with your employees to help them feel more supported

    Pros

Fantastic opportunity to affect people's lifestyles and build relationships.

    Cons

Company fell on difficult financial times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend more time in the trenches to identify staff obstacles to success. Cut the fat from the very top of the executive chain. Reward those controlling costs than just those generating revenue.

I worked at Club One part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Free membership
    Lots of locations
    Variety of instructors

    Cons

Absolutely horrible management. The current SF group fitness director is the worst I've ever seen.
They tried to have no group fitness manager for about a year, and the new one, RG, is worse than no one. There's no support at all.
Horrendous Equipment. As mics break, they just buy terrible ones.
The clubs are getting old and worn out.
Get the best starting salary you can: it's never raised.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your best instructors are leaving over the terrible management of the place.

    Pros

    -My co-workers (non-management) were amazing.
    -very nice facility
-interesting place to work-most members are nice
-great teamwork among lower-level employees for the most part

    Cons

    -crappy management
    -terrible treatment of the staff
-no room for advancement or growth
    -crappy benefits and pay
    -doesn't stand up for employees
-throws their staff under the bus
    -unsupportive management
-the outlook for this company is terrible

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Current Employee - Service Desk Representative in Palo Alto, CA

I have been working at Club One part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

My co-workers, but NOT the management. The majority of my co-workers are amazing and supportive, except for those who kiss up to the terrible management and screw their co-workers over.

    Cons

    -terrible management
    -management is unsupportive of staff
    - there are illogical rules and procedures
    - the mangement screws their staff over
    -they don't hire from within
-don't fully train or provide proper guidance for emergency procedures.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get better management and stop screwing all your staff over. Your "shinning" reputation that draws in possible employees doesn't last long once they are hired. Everyone is heading out the door ASAP. This place is a disaster waiting to happen.

I worked at Club One full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Positive work environment and fun staff. Management are approachable. Nice clubs and safety is taken very seriously. This company has a very skilled HR department and labor laws and considerations are taken very seriously. There are opportunities to advance for employees that are eager to learn and apply themselves. This company allows you to think outside of the box and come up with great ideas. Some of the best management skills I learned were gained while being employed with Club One. Club One is very flexible with school and family schedules. They believe that if you are happy in your personal life, you will be happy at work. This can be the most valuable part of working with Club One, because many other companies do not care.

    Cons

Low pay for employees and no raises, unless you promote. There is a strong disconnect with the corporate office and club level. Corporate often creates rules/promotions that just don't work on the club level. Employees also are hardly ever given recognition for hard work and/or achievements. Besides health benefits for full time employees, there are no other perks or incentives offered.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize your employees. Corporate: spend more time at the clubs to find out what really works and what doesn't for each demographic.
