I have been working at Coastal Federal Credit Union full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

There is room for growth, depending on the department , the co-workers are great.

    Cons

its hard to have a work-life balance. There use to be more people that cared about the quality of their work, now its more about quantity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider trying to retain your employees, that have tenure with the company, rather than allowing others to get them out of the door. the Credit union is turning into a bank.

I have been working at Coastal Federal Credit Union

    Pros

I have worked with the nicest people at CFCU. Everyone is on the same team and there is no back-stabbing. A very family-friendly atmosphere. Coastal is a family.

    Cons

Sr Management cannot seem to make up their minds about the type of org Coastal should be. The branch staff is constantly being restructured. Good, competent managers are moved around and demoted for unexplained reasons. There is little or no promotion from within. A Sr. VP came from RBC Bank and he keeps creating VP positions form former RBCers. He seems to think Coastal employees are inferior to his RBC cronies!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please be consistent in branch structure and personnel. This is a relationship business and you seem to have forgotten that. Stop moving people around different branches! Develop an internal career development program and start promoting from within!

I worked at Coastal Federal Credit Union full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Decent, not great, benefits, 401k

    Cons

The automated tellers are a disaster! As a result, the members are mostly cranky and they will let you hear it! It seems CFCU creates a "VP" position monthly so they can bring another failed RBC cronie over. The result, you saw what happened to RBC, the ship is taking on water fast. CFCU is headed down the same path. Honestly, I have no clue how people that are so wreckless with money can be in the important positions they are in. I wont name names, but the man in charge of all the branches constantly alienates his managers by demoting them then hiring externally for their positions. He makes HUGE, costly decisions for the branches, yet he visits them once every few months. I have never seen someone more undeserving of a position than this guy, been in banking for 10+ years!

HR is a disaster, honestly they are clueless. Please do not quit your job to go here, you will regret it. If you are jobless, I would advise a restaurant. This place is a nightmare. Coming from a guy that worked 4+ years and resigned. This review is 100% honest and not biased.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fire all these RBC crones. Promote from within. It's a shame these guys are changing CFCU in to the company it is today, because the CEO is a very nice guy who had a great company, 5-10 years ago. Staff your branches to handle the rush's.

I have been working at Coastal Federal Credit Union

    Pros

    Job security and good benefits

    Cons

Minimal raises, NO advancement, awful teller machines, disrespected branch employees, cranky members, disconnect from corporate office. STAGNANT POSITIONS.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find ways to keep talent by promoting from within. Do research before implementing major change. Lose the teller machines

I worked at Coastal Federal Credit Union

    Pros

Credit Unions provide an excellent product and services to members and Coastal is a very good provider of these services.

    Cons

In the last couple of years, they have grown exceptionally large and haven't been able to treat employees with the proper respect. There is very little room for advancement in a company that remains focused on it's own objectives without regards for employee training and advancement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do a better job training and promoting employees. Allow employees to review the performance and abilities of middle level management and invest heavily in training.

I worked at Coastal Federal Credit Union as a contractor (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Very few, but I will name one-Job security
The people who are under the VP's and Managers (good luck)

    Cons

    1. Management-Placed in these roles with a system called the good ole boy. I'm sorry management is actually called a VP. Look at your subordinates for growth. Not some bearded dragon. You have to understand and meet your employees needs and help them grow. This is the only way a company will grow. Because of the poor decision making capabilities of some VP's (who do not know what they are actually in charge of) this company will not last the next 5 years.
    2. Supervisor-Actually called managers in this frozen waste land. They place people off the street in these positions just because they say they have a degree. What's your degree in you say? How about fish hatchery, sounds great you will do great in blah blah blah dealing with high end things, and make crucial decisions for our members well being. Do you know how to do this? Nope but I can fake it and re-itterate things with the best of them. Sounds good here is a fat pay-day and a fancy title and you are on your way to VP young person.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change, you all should look at your people under you. Recognize, reward, and promote. Trust there are people under your nose that are more capable of running your department than you are.

I worked at Coastal Federal Credit Union

    Pros

Benefits, genuine interest in employees welfare. Management very competent and ethical. Employees are given first notice of job openings.

    Cons

Seniority sometimes allows for a bad attitude among some employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Some of the staff at Corporate Center were unprofessional and catty during training sessions and conferences. Some of the staff that has been there a long time are resentful towards new employees. Cross training or team incentives may help those who have stagnated at their positions.
