I worked at Cogenra Solar full-time for more than a year

    Pros

I was given lots of responsibility from the start that only grew from there. Very interesting technology and a strong appetite for new ideas across the organization.

    Cons

Making a market for commercial scale solar hot water in North America. We entered the market right as the shale gas and oil boom was picking up steam in the U.S. The downward price pressure on natural gas made the value of the thermal production from the system low. And, copper piping, as it turns out, was difficult to cost optimize.

I have been working at Cogenra Solar full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Wide open to make an impact on every level and be a key contributor from day 1 (OK, maybe after a week or two).
Solid group of brilliant people who care about each decision and a tightly knit camaraderie between all levels of staff.
    Positive and reinforcing management.
A hands on company and product - you get to build it and you get to go outside!

    Cons

    No Odwalla hand washing stations.
Jokes about 'The Cloud' mostly go unheeded.
A gnome lives inside the building and is constantly stealing impact drivers.

I worked at Cogenra Solar full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Opportunity to work with a highly intelligent, driven team and leadership who will push you to perform at a very high level. Everyone at the company owns a critical part of the product, business or both. The company is excellent at engineering design, analysis, rapid prototyping and testing. Highly recommend for engineers or hands on technical people looking to be part of building a great solar product.

    Cons

Don't expect to start slow or receive much training at Cogenra. You'll join and be expected to contribute quickly and significantly. Work-life balance will be your responsibility.

I have been working at Cogenra Solar full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Lots of opportunity to be a key contributor. Smart, capable, driven people are rewarded and promoted. Truly impressive and trust worthy team, with great camaraderie and a collaborative/positive/supportive environment.

    Cons

It is fast paced and demanding. Cogenra is a lean running machine, if you are looking for frills or silicone valley perks like an in-house barista or a fleet of company color coded bikes this may not be the place for you.

I worked at Cogenra Solar as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

Opportunity to work with top-notch engineering talent focused on developing innovative industrial applications for solar technology.

Lunch is provided for all employees every Friday!

    Cons

    Senior Management:
    - Complete lack of understanding of the value of their employees.
    - Unprofessional and frequently just plain rude and boorish behavior.
    - Very quick to blame infrastructure or process problems on employees at all levels.
    - Foster a paranoid work environment.
    - Unrealistic expectations further complicated by an unfocused senior management team.
    - Management style exhibits a lack of familiarity with collaboration and teamwork concepts.
    - I could go on...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You have brilliant and passionate employees, but it's obvious, given your turnover rate, that you do not value this in your company culture. Sometimes the biggest problems you cannot see are looking back at you in the mirror.

I worked at Cogenra Solar full-time for less than a year

    Pros

You have a chance to work with many brilliant people.

Because it is a startup, you have the opportunity to work on many facets of the business; from R&D input, sales and business development, analytical analysis and interaction with C-level staff

    Cons

Upper management is very technically focused and they don't care much about hiring and laying people off. In addition, pay is very low compared to other companies, less than expected even for a startup.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

By working with current employees who may be unhappy, you won't have to spend so many resources bringing new people on board and up to speed.

Pick a particular direction for the product and company and focus all resources on that endeavor. Don't pursue different directions every weak and accomplish nothing.

I worked at Cogenra Solar full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Technology has potential, some smart people there.
    Lots of industry contacts
Still a small chance they'll make it

    Cons

    Nobody cares any more.
Management doesn't care about the employees.
Employees don't care about the product any more.
Nobody cares about the company, except maybe keep buy-out potential going a bit longer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Re-think your values. Huge employee turn-over should be a big red flag.
