I worked at Cognex full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great company culture. Things like movie night, $5000 trip after being there for 10 years and higher amounts for 15, 20 and 25 years, Halloween celebration with huge prizes for best costume just to name a few.

    Cons

Company is in a big growth mode so with that come the challenges of keeping the smaller startup feel. Currently don't have a work from home option which could make it difficult to attract the younger generation.

    Good company

I have been working at Cognex full-time

    Pros

A lot of company paid activities, such as play day, outing, etc. - almost too much. The company is financially in a very good shape, which means less lay-offs when the economy gets shaky.

    Cons

You lose about 4 days of your PTO because of forced "shutdown". Salaries are lower than similar companies - mine is almost 20% lower, according to Glassdoor.

    Pros

Pays well - $135-250K depending on bonuses. Some great people to work with.

    Cons

Very hostile work environment. Most of the company is quite arrogant.

I worked at Cognex as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Though this was only a short contract the environment was professional and the people were friendly.
The cafeteria food was also pretty good.

    Cons

For some reason my hiring manager was bothered by the Christian web site I had on my resume.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Don't discriminate against Christians.

I have been working at Cognex

    Pros

There is lots to be done and you can own as many things as you want if you ask for them.

    Cons

Culture is stifling, people are so over-loaded that no real work with meaningful progress can get done, work life balance is a joke.

  9.

Cutthroat corporate culture with arrogant middle management.

I have been working at Cognex full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The technology is very cool. The algorithms developed by Cognex are world class. Some very smart engineering talent works in Natick. Also, the sales force is extremely motivated, so it is a great place to learn how to effectively sell a technology product.

Company is global, so there are many opportunities to work/travel internationally.

    Cons

The Cognex culture in Natick is far more corporate (back-stabbing) than you are initially led to believe. The turnover rate, especially in the sales force, is higher than at any other company I've worked for in the past 5 years. In two years, I have seen over 5 people in HR come and go, including an HR Director.

The game room, the cultural events, etc. are all tools used to help people forget how underpaid they are relative to the market.

Also, the cost of living in MA is such that the below-average pay makes it very difficult to work at Cognex and maintain a comfortable quality of life.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize that you need to compensate your developing talent, or else they will take their skills elsewhere. People who have the ability to gain employment elsewhere will eventually leave if they don't feel respected by management. You can gain more through positive motivation rather than threatening people's jobs.

I worked at Cognex full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Working on new product. Being apart of the work to bring it to the public. Working with very intelligent people. The team atmosphere. Their commitment to quality. I enjoyed working on RMA's and fixing them. Determining what caused a unit to fail. I enjoyed being a part of the team to better and more versatile units.

    Cons

Getting parts sometimes for old units. The slow season between starting a new product and having finished getting the last new one up and running.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stream line the getting parts for the older units. Keep up the courses in team work. They much improve are abilities to function as a team.

    I worked at Cognex full-time

    Pros

This is where I cut my teeth as a manager, which I much preferred to writing code, although I still contributed at the architecture level.

    Cons

Forced shut down and either no pay or use vacation hours for a specific week in the summer, decided by the Executive Team.
