Pros
job security, there is always plenty of work to be done. most employees are long term and you develop good working relationships
Cons
There is a tremendous workload expected of all employees. There is very little room for advancement and employee cutbacks are continuous.
Advice to Senior Management
Customer service and satisfaction should be the first priority in any service oriented company. Employee cut backs only damage quality of service.
Pros
Company vehicle with gas card - no paying for your commute.
Flexible start times.
Freedom to work at your own pace.
Cons
You will never make any money. Started at $11 an hour, a year later I got my first raise, 22 cents. A 2% raise is all they will give, so it will literally take you 5 years to go from making $11 an hour to $12 an hour.
They do not pay overtime, even if you work it. They will simply tell you to go home early tomorrow, then when you try, they will complain that you are leaving early.
They do not pay for your drive time, your last job was an hour and a half away from home? That ride home is off the clock.
They are not interested in fixing problems, simply making the calls go away as fast as possible. Have a property that has machines that are over 15 years old and are falling apart? Good Luck, your gonna be there ever single week for hours on end performing miracles trying to keep customers from yelling at you while you try to put the machines back together with duct tape and hope.
Advice to Senior Management
Treat your employees better.
Pros
You will be given the opportunity to do all upper managements work while they send it off to Texas and take credit for it. You will also be able to witness what happens when "management" (working 30+ years) has a company that has evolved around them. If you become management, 90% of the employees are your relatives which leaves the other 10% to do the real work. It's "All in the Family"
Cons
As long as you have no family you will have a great chance for promotion. The only communication you will receive is when they terminate you or your co-workers after 20-25 years of service, or have the misfortune of getting hurt on the job, i.e. motor vehicle accident, gun to your head? no problem, Hammond is happy to terminate. No rules, no regulations, "Just because they can."
Advice to Senior Management
Being Bipolar is a treatable condition. Being two-faced may require surgery.
Pros
In most positions there is very good life/work balance, but it can really depend on who you work for. Over the last 10-15 the company has been solid and reliable, giving you job security if you can execute to expectation. In general, the bar is pretty low, so that should not be hard for hard working, competent people. For the right person, there is great opportunity withing Coinmach, especially if you work for the right people. The company has a great platform, and as long as risks are taken, the future for Coinmach should be very bright even as the core business slowly declines.
Cons
Comparatively low paying in many positions. Very non entrepreneurial, risk averse culture. Some would view this as a plus. In many cases it creates a dynamic in which tenure is given preference to performance, which leads to non performance driven culture. Like many companies, the business is very demanding, and managers are always asked to do more with less. In many cases a macro approach to managing at the executive level has lead managers to make decsions that improve short term performance but likely erode long term value. Ultimately value is determined by the market, and to date this has not been proven out.
Advice to Senior Management
Senior management has an excellent track reward. Keep up the good work, try to take more risks. Managing risk does not mean not taking any, when you go with an idea, estimate the resources you project it to need and double it. Lots of good ideas seem to get wasted because an unrealistic assumption on the resources needed to support the idea. Work hard to create a more entreprenuerial, performance driven culture.
