I have been working at Colby College part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    • Take into consideration work-life balance of a college student, allowing for work-schedule flexibility - academics valued as top priority
    • Professors are wonderful mentors and go above and beyond what is necessary - providing students with networking opportunities and resources

    Cons

    • Can be hard to find a professor with matching research interests, as it is a small liberal arts college with a smaller faculty

    Pros

Good student job, gives opportunity to work with professors outside the classroom, flexible schedule, looks good on the resume, not too time consuming

    Cons

Can only work 12 hours a week, Maine's minimum wage is really low, definitely need an additional source of income

I have been working at Colby College part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

healthy schoolwork-work balance, friendly professors and staff, easy to get a job, almost every boss is understanding about times that you might miss because of excessive schoolwork etc.

    Cons

hard to get promoted, some jobs have much more rigid hours than others, I've heard that dining hall workers are overworked (although their real employer is sodexo so I suppose that is out of the school's hands)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

should put more ES students in charge of sustainable dining hall practices

    Pros

Supportive faculty and engaging students. Excellent way to make some side-money while still a student, as well as develop good communication skills and meet new people.

    Cons

Can be difficult to find times to meet given student's complicated schedules. Pay scale remains the same regardless of experience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management does a great job providing tutors for those who need it.

I worked at Colby College full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

I found this to be a very supportive, stable environment to work in. The staff provided thorough training based on the experience and expertise of the person who previously held this job. There was clear communication about priorities and the role of the position in the overall organization. The department culture was easy-going and team-oriented. There was room for lateral movement within different departments and divisions but not a lot of turnover. Work/life balance is valued highly and communicated clearly. The organization values the employees a great deal. Most people who are hired here stay for decades.

    Cons

The rate of pay for initial hires at the entry level is minimal. I found that some of my peers were working an additional job to meet the cost of living.
