    Fulfilling

    Manager GIT (Current Employee)
    Morristown, NJ

Pros1. Excellent work life balance : The company truly cares for its employees personal priorities
    2. Lot of focus on development of the employee : A lot of effort is put into planning development of individual careers
    3. Challenging work : Lot of fulfilling work available

Cons1. Not enough dynamism in overall company strategy : The company does not appear to care much about achieving a higher growth rate (topline or bottom line)
    2. Too system driven : Almost bureaucratic in the approach in many areas
    3. Too cautious in decision making.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe top management needs to focus on building strategies for generating higher topline growth to provide faster growth opportunities to employees to grow their careers. This could include inorganic growth options (mergers and acquisitions).

Senior Management is out of touch.

    National Account Manager (Current Employee)
    Morristown, NJ

ProsGood benefits and products with strong brands.

ConsSenior Management is out of touch with the reality of the sales environment. Key positions are not filled in a timely manner. Management has a bullying style of leadership. Senior Management uses the same rhetoric over and over with no action behind the words. The are viewed as hyporcritical. Very risk-averse and conservative. HR works for management and not the employees. Colgate is a good news company and honesty is not encouraged.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt's time to make some changes in key management positions to bring a fresh perspective and a 21st century style of management back to the US Company. Let HR work for the employees and separate them more from the opinions of senior management's bias and influence.

easy work, good pay, but no growth

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Morristown, NJ

    Pros-good pay
    -flexible hours
    -they pay for your education
    -people do respect each other
    -no pressure/stress on the job

Cons-no career growth for people that are just starting out
    -company is too conservative
-they have strict rules on people working from home only after a year
    -managers aren't too technical
-ideas are welcome but they prefer to stick to their old ways

Advice to Senior Management-take classes and become more technical
-management is full of 1st generation people that have not caught on to the latest technology
-it is OKAY to employ new people
-a good manager is one that is able to do all of the work on the team and knows how much time and effort each task may require
-relying on certain members of the team to figure out "what next???" shows inability to lead a team.

Great company that has lost focus on its employees.

    Project Leader (Current Employee)
    Morristown, NJ

ProsColgate truly understands the work-life balance. This is stressed by senior management and true for all employees. Some departments even include programs to work from home. While there may be exceptions during times of go-lives or product launches, management recognizes that we are a toothpaste company and work should not interrupt family life on a daily basis. The benefits package are fair.

ConsManagement's understanding of who is really performing the work and providing the greatest value to to company is often misguided. Promotions are far too political and not based upon merit.

Competition for retaining employees is a challenge due to local competition. Management only views other consumer goods companies as competition for employees, not recognizing that many skills are easily translated to other industries. Despite this, turnover is still relatively low, since it is a good company to work for.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus more on the employees, for it is the employees who make the firm and are its future. Improve efforts to retain employees, including improved internal training, and merit based promotions.

A good, stable company with good intentions and potential

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Morristown, NJ

ProsVery stable, often very caring. The benefits are great, and very comprehensive. As a global leader there are many opportunities to gain valuable experiences. If a person wants to work internationally there are lots of opportunities. In fact, promotions at times require that an individual accept moving around and even taking an international assignment.

ConsIt can be hard to get promoted without political connections. Some folks appear to be fast-tracked and others who work very hard are overlooked. Recognition is seen by some as being inconsistent. The training program is weak. Employee turnover. The efforts to save money can be short sighted. Example: plant shutdowns and other budget restrictions.

Advice to Senior ManagementCorporate and R&D functions should be more in touch with plants.
