I have been working at Colgate-Palmolive full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    Team approach for continuous improvement.

    Cons

Few avenues for career advancement for hourly employees with degrees and prior management experience.

    Advice to Management

Streamline process for identifying talent already in the organization and provide means for developing talent for growth, satisfaction, and retention.

    Approves of CEO

I have been working at Colgate-Palmolive full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The CEO is very ethics and quality focused. There is a formal process where everyone lists their career goals every year. The company also went through a restructure, and impacted people where given sufficient notice and opportunity to apply for other open positions. Headquarters is in NYC which is great for people who like big-city life. The company also has some smaller offices in smaller towns. Also a very, very strong internation presence. The company does a great job moving high potential talent across different countries.

    Cons

There are a few people who are low performers who I've seen get shifted from job to job. In my mind it would be better to let them go instead of letting a low performer stick around for 15 years. Having headquarters in NYC is a negative for me. I wish Colgate was based in a city with lower cost of living. The international business can be seen as a con; if a promotion opens up, you are not only competing with people in your home country, but people all over the world for that promotion.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the constant messages about quality and ethics.

I have been working at Colgate-Palmolive full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The work/life balance is execellent. So is the company culture. I love that this is a family oriented company who understands that employees have lives outside of work. The office hours are great! You can't beat 8:30 AM to 4:15 PM! Summer Fridays is a bonus as well and I feel that the company does think about employee retirement and does a lot to ensure that employees have a good income even once they retire.

    Cons

The salary is ok, but it could be a bit higher in New York since the cost of living is so high.

    Negative Outlook

    I worked at Colgate-Palmolive full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The flexibility to work from remote locations is still difficult to beat. The health insurance is still pretty good.

    Cons

The pay is no longer top end. It used to be very competitive, but now there are much better paying jobs out there. They are moving much of the business support functions to centralized locations outside of the US, so there is little opportunity for advancing. There are a lot of issues that just get ignored because it just has to work even though there hasn't been much thought put into the initiatives. Management does not listen to the people who know how to do the job because they think they know better. It is bad when you cannot tell whether the Dilbert comic strip is made up or about your (former) company.

    Advice to Management

Spend the money to hire good people. Quit trying to get by with hiring people who don't know very much but are put in a job that used to be a senior role. You get what you pay for, and if you're after cheap labor the quality of work will be just as cheap. It isn't a good thing when over half the employees have been there for less than 10 years. That means half the people don't know what they're doing.

I have been working at Colgate-Palmolive full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Excellent community of colleagues. Supportive culture. Plenty of opportunity for those prepared to work hard and be flexible about where the company wants to place you.

    Cons

High alignment culture means that things can move very slowly. IT & Technical systems are old and high control which makes it difficult to keep pace with outside world. Salary and benefit programs are very rigid. Work by rule rather than guiding principles and logic, eg terrible vacation policy which management recognizes but won't change.

    Pros

Nice, friendly environment, except HRs. They are hard to negotiate

    Cons

The HRs have more say in recruiting compared to scientists, even the HRs have no idea about the needs of R&D.
