I worked at College Track as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

Schedule, Very flexible, office environment, small non-profit, everyone knows each other at work, warmth, everyone helps everyone,

    Cons

only mon-fri only work from 8-6 there is hardly parking, but they do reimburse for parking in parking structures sometimes chaotic and scrambled

I have been working at College Track full-time

    Pros

Inspiring, focused and fun staff. This is a learning organization, looking at what is working and what's not and constantly fine tuning to make it better. Must be entrepreneurial in spirit. Excellent vacation time!

    Cons

Pay is ok. Lots of work and you will have to really carve out your personal time, no matter what everyone else is doing. If you are in the right department, there are great career opportunities. If not, then you are out of luck.

    Pros

Energetic, fun, intelligent co-workers. Flexible hours. Excellent vacation time.

    Cons

Low pay, even with pay increases and bonus. Problems are not solved using collective intelligence of direct service staff.

I have been working at College Track full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

-Relative flexibility in implementation of program and work vision. -Flexible work schedules. -The organization is in relatively stable financial ground compared to most non-profits. -Most staff members have no fundraising responsibilities. -Relatively stable funding -Professional networking opportunities

    Cons

-Organizational leadership overemphasizes Ed-Reform driven, empty buzzwords ("GRIT", "Non-Cognitive"), which drive top down initiatives. This is all done with little to no input from direct service staff. -Little to no opportunities for personal & professional development. -Internal promotion system has been historically confusing and opaque. The most experienced staffers are ignored or overlooked in filling leadership roles -Historically underpaid staff, especially on the direct service side. -Very High Turnover Rates -Sites are increasingly becoming understaffed

    Advice to Management

The org really needs to broaden it's staffing and recruiting base. Classroom teachers (especially TFA alums) are overrepresented in the organizations staffing structure. There is a need for more community based educators and youth workers and who have connections and rapport with the communities the organization is based. Is it really surprising that turnover rates are so high, especially when new hires have little to no knowledge or connection to these communities?

I have been working at College Track part-time

    Pros

Contributing to social justice by becoming part of the support system for low-income, minoritiy students' as they work towards their goal of achieving higher education. Seeing students gain confidence as they learn how its done. It doesn't get much better than this. Working with smart, dedicated people is a gift. Also, CT promotes from within. Once you have a full-time job there is a good amount of mobility (at the site level) when other positions open up.

    Cons

Maintains full time staff with benefits to a bare minimum.

    Advice to Management

Save money by recruiting and taking good care of high quality volunteers who derive meaning from participating in CTs mission. Do not save money by hiring part-time staff with no benefits.

  7. College Affairs Manager

I have been working at College Track full-time

    Pros

Freedom to be creative in the work we do. People are friendly for the most part. Responsive to staff feedback.

    Cons

Lack of resources. Salaries are not reflective of what the staff deserves. Lack of consequences for the students, which means the students are allowed to do whatever they want to.

    Advice to Management

Need to be more focused on student consequences for poor behavior. Need to support staff in implementing consequences and not allowing students to get away with everything.

College Track is changing. They have interim leadership and the org is a ship a drift.

    Pros

The people are smart and dedicated

    Cons

    poor and non-existent national leadership.

    Advice to Management

Decide what kind of org you'd like to be and quickly. We all want to leave and are looking for other jobs.

    Pros

The work environment leaves a lot of room for innovation and creativity. The people are just as passionate about working with high school youth as much as the next person. Most importantly, there is ethic and moral value that gets passed along to today's young people.

    Cons

The company is growing to past in scale. There is a lack of infrastructure to meet the size of the organization. With growth, the direct service employees are not being compensated or appreciated for the long hours and hard work.

    Advice to Management

Build the plane before you fly it. Look out for those who helped you build it.

    Pros

Great mission. Incredible students. You get to work with smart, talented people. I have learned so much from my colleagues and my manager. There's a work hard, play hard culture. Rare to find an org with such genuine, committed and fun people. Best org I've worked for to date.

    Cons

Scaling too quickly and there's growing pains. Systems and processes can be a lot more efficient. Very fast paced culture - which could be good or bad depending on your personality.

    Advice to Management

Slow down and focus on building infrastructure. Prioritize quality over scale. Relationships and trust among students and staff are the secret sauce

I worked at College Track full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The students are great and the program's mission is good.

    Cons

TFA program alum were given preference in all positions simply because the CEO is an alum himself. Poor overall management. Site staff were treated like peasants during fundraising events. Salaries are not very good considering that you have to work until 8 or 9pm on weekdays, and a lot of Saturdays.
