I have been working at College of Charleston

    Pros

Good atmosphere. Great people to work with. Fantastic student body. Nice time off at Christmas. Flex hours available (within reason) for most offices. Inclusive environmnet.

    Cons

Salaries are lower than compared to other colleges and businesses. Not incentivised to excel. Few if any raises in last 3-4 yrs. State business - behind in processes. People are allowed to stay in jobs when they're not performing. Not the best health care plan.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Step up your game. Advocate for increases for your staff. Don't reward incompetency with across the board increases. Instead, reward hard work and innovation to those picking up the slack of others with decent increases. Let go of dead weight.

I have been working at College of Charleston part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Completely willing to work around your schedule, trust and respect, the ability to manage my own time. Fun and fast paced.

    Cons

The budget of the different departments is highly skewed and it's really disappointing see certain ones get denied something when others can get anything they want.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hardly any way to progress or be promoted. I've heard this complaint from so many faculty members that it makes me glad that I am just a student employee and not a full-time one.

I have been working at College of Charleston part-time

    Pros

Beautiful campus. Stunning location. Within walking distance to a couple cafés. Congenial and professional colleagues.

    Cons

Parking is expensive and good parking spots are scarce. The whole parking procedure can easily tack on 30 minutes to what is likely to be a 25 minute AM commute and a 45 minute PM commute, owing to rush hour traffic jams.

I have been working at College of Charleston full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Nice campus, good students, nice classroom sizes. The university has attracted faculty who are passionate teachers particularly of undergraduate students.

    Cons

Poor leadership. An excess of top down accountability from all level of administration; however administration fends off at all cost placing its record under the microscope. As a result there is a widening gap between faculty/staff and administration (all levels).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hopefully the new president will bring faculty and staff together under a shared vision. We had this 7 years ago

I have been working at College of Charleston full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Computer Science department is very well financed. Competitive education with a liberal acts background - great professors, great people. Go to school in paradise

    Cons

Many other degrees are not useful or well funded. Some of the professors in liberal arts areas don't communicate or teach well and the large number of non-native speakers is sometimes confusing

As in any public institute there's a fair amount of bureaucracy, but this is a laid-back, fulfilling place to work.

I worked at College of Charleston full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good culture of promoting within, providing opportunities to grow and lots of protection as state employee. The campus is beautiful, the people are great and it's a wonderful College to work for. Open minded and supportive environment.

    Cons

As a state employee, there is little room for growth in salary (though plenty in responsibilities), raises are minimal and there are strict regulations regarding pay that HR has to keep to, so if you're looking for a well paying job at an entry or mid level, this isn't the place. Senior staff members enjoy respectable salaries, but the "little" people - not so much.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Compensation for entry-level and mid-level staff is poor. Temp positions can go years without converting into permanent ones, which is demoralizing. Raises were stagnate and salary is determined following outdated bureaucratic guidelines.
