I worked at College of Western Idaho full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Very hard working faculty and staff. A very Inclusive culture. Many Higher Ed institutions have an us against them mentality that CWI has avoided. They also have great benefits.

    Cons

Pay at the time was below market valuations.

    Pros

Great students. Fellow faculty are generally good to work with. No requirements to be on premises during the summer months. Recently added personal days for faculty.

    Cons

Terrible administration, no respect for faculty. No ability to plan appropriately putting faculty in a position of having to share offices meaning there is no possibility of private conversations with students.

    Advice to Management

Get a board that understands what higher education is about. Fire the president who feels it's appropriate to throw tantrums and scream at people when they don't do what they like. Don't allow people to be hired just because they're 'friends' with the president rather than because they have a skill set required to do a job.

I have been working at College of Western Idaho full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

CWI has a VERY GOOD atmosphere with the staff and faculty. We really do work together very well. Pay is okay, not the best, but okay. Many of us do know we are here for the students, and the students are most important to us. We also put out quality.

    Cons

Sure some students have negative comments, but the success stories way out number any negatives. Sometimes it's the student, not the staff/faculty. There is a sense of entitlement with some of the younger students, and that goes for the entire U.S.

    Advice to Management

Keep up with other companies in the area, as far as pay. Need positive feedback; HR stop training like "What type of animal personality are you?" Customer Service training must be continual for success and student satisfaction, but don't pound the workers on the phones....they looked wiped out sometimes!

I have been working at College of Western Idaho full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people are usually fantastic to work with. People are eager to do a good job and help you do the same. Management is a mixed bag (I've had both great and terrible, luckily currently great) and benefits are fantastic. Training is solid. Opportunities for a promotion is very present.

    Cons

Upper management (Directors, VPs) can be slow and detached. Things that require action or investigation take way too long. Not enough willingness to get necessary info to make good judgment calls. Sometimes upper leadership can leave you feeling like a cog. Not sufficient HR policies (i.e. time-off request regulations)

    Advice to Management

Managers are doing strong, improving things constantly. Higher ups need to work on approving/denying things faster.

I have been working at College of Western Idaho full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

CWI is the only college in Idaho besides BYU that is actually growing right now. All other colleges are declining in student growth. The economy is down, unemployment is up, while it is recovering, community colleges are poised to solve that. Good teachers, Great support staff, TONS of locations, and on good routes. Serves a larger demographic than other schools in the area. CHEAPER than everywhere else, and gets people in the workforce faster.

    Cons

Lacks the prestige of other schools. Too soon to have been established. Definitely growing pains Despite amazing lower level staff, it has terrible management. Out of touch, out of date. Still talking about interactive video to current sites, as if that is the future - even though other colleges have done it for 15 years. Embarrassingly offensive management. Inappropriate behaviour, embarrassing moments, rude people. Retribution if you report obscene and abusive behaviour. Low pay, but everywhere pays low right now in Idaho, that's not a real comment.

    Advice to Management

I know everyone says to just fire everbody, but. ... fire some people. Seriously, evecutive directors and VPs in a few spots - healthcare, workforce development, and business management are completely out of their element. The jobs hiring require tech people and in healthcare. And you aren't marketing for those programs? Students are out there. Front end staff need replaced as well.

I worked at College of Western Idaho full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent compensation. Convient work hours. Some really great departments. Convenient locations. Paid twice a month.

    Cons

Constantly changing. The departments are constantly being reorganized so you never know who you report to when there is a problem. Know one ever has any answers when you need them. Poor communication.

    Advice to Management

    Communication needs to be improved

I have been working at College of Western Idaho full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    some faculty are still hopeful

    Cons

The president is the realization of the antagonist from, "Despicable Me." He truly is despicable in every essential and nuanced definition. The Board of Trustees, like the president, incapable of administering a functional institution. They have poured millions of poorly managed funds into projects and programs without a plan. It is truly unbelievable that a conservative community like Boise has let this nonsense go on as long as it has. Tried working there and had to leave.

    Advice to Management

Board of Trustees - resign President - retire

    Pros

The work has some intrinsic value. You actively add to a new College, ie. processes, culture The people you work with are great. The students are understanding and very helpful. The growth potential is exciting

    Cons

This is a new school that is publicly funded. It is not established and lacks the ability to pay up to market wages. There is also a lack of resources, facilities and staffing. The lack of policies makes for a wild west atmosphere at times.

    Advice to Management

Tough decisions are required and most understand the need for them. Keeping everyone informed would alleviate the constant uncertainty that most employees feel.
