Good experience but improvements to operational structure and support on national level would help.

I worked at Colliers International full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Speaking to national level (US) operations only. Colliers has a lot of executives who care a lot and try really hard to do what's best for the company and its employees. There is a good amount of opportunity to move up in the company and make lateral movements. Benefits are about average. Compared to other top international CRE firms, Colliers has a more innovative culture and mentality. The company is not afraid to make significant changes, even if the intended result takes a while to materialize. Tries to provide a coherent national brand presence, culture, and messaging while balancing local brokers' need for independence and market customization; but as is the case across the industry, this can be difficult to achieve across the board. Lots of good people at Colliers.

    Cons

Work hours can be long and expectations high. Like other large, national/international companies, despite some of the best intentions, change can sometimes come slowly and result in more issues at first than solutions. No 401K matching - only discretionary company contributions capped at an annual max.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More support for operational staff, i.e. Marketing, Research, Events, Graphics, Web, iT. Better process for filtering and pushing best practices and ideas from local markets to the national level. Better technology and integration for CRM system.

    Pros

Working hours and work/life balance was good. Not much else I can think of.

    Cons

Quite literally the worst job one could EVER have. Support staff is treated lower than dirt, office politics are bordering on illegal, there is no HR for when an employee has an issue. Pay is extremely low and expectations are extremely high. Upper management won't hesitate to harass and bully you. Brokers have no accountability whatsoever and are treated (and act) like they are gods. The benefits are tailored to comission-based employees, so if you are salaried (which the entire support staff is) you'll be paying a lot out of pocket. There is little to no communication in the office which leads to the constant re-doing of projects, and everything is very last minute. I was told multiple times I was not allowed to use my sanctioned sick time even when providing doctors notes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your employees like humans. For a company that relies so heavily on support staff, you should want the good ones to stick around. Put a solid human resources department in place, it will keep the company much better managed. Communicate with your employees and tell them when they are doing a great job.

    Pros

Colliers has great people, and is good at brokering real estate transactions. They have an eye towards the future and are leveraging technology to boost productivity.

    Cons

Some of the infrastructure is a bit antiquated, and there were too many reorganizations to keep a constant focus on getting core functionality stabilized. I did not see this myself, but I hear that they are working on it now and moving in the right direction.

    Pros

Great people to work for and work with. Good with offering autonomy and independence. If you perform well, you can move up. Good reputation throughout the community. The culture is family friendly, respectful, encouraging, positive.

    Cons

Not enough time in the day to complete everything required. Industry is known for low pay and high hours.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Higher salaries may help turn-over rate. Encouraging time-off would help morale.

    Pros

Casual Fridays (polos or shorts) were great, although I didn't partake. Annual Chili cook-off and other company-wide events keep you cohesive as an office.

    Cons

Everyone is so focused on deal making and business that some people lose their touch of humanness.
