Think twice about teaching at this college.

I worked at Collin County Community College as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Multiple campuses.
    Enrollment increases annually.
    Salary raises most years.

    Cons

Professional educators are treated like first year retail clerks.
Management frequently exaggerates and will tell you flat out lies or give you completely misleading (and appealing) details about salary, benefits, perks, etc.
Remember the cliques in junior high and high school? Welcome back! Be prepared to be either a Prom King or Queen, member of the home-coming court or be voted Class President. OR find yourself lining of for team selection in phys. ed. - and being picked last. Don't be surprised if you get benched, either.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Follow through with promises. Reward excellence instead of over-looking it and focusing on totally irrelevant nano-details that no other college or university in the United States cares about. Treat all professionals professionally. Stop stirring the pot and stay out of the gossip and petty political games. You're job is to build a top notch team, not to join the bullies during recess.

The President is a micro-manager who disrespects the faculty

I have been working at Collin County Community College full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

good salary, student-centered faculty, emphasis on quality teaching

    Cons

The President, a classic workplace bully, demeans faculty by talking behind their back to other faculty and administrators. He has created a climate of fear and distrust and his passion for confrontation has been adopted by upper administration. Decisions are made that affect the faculty without faculty input and certain "bad cops" are used to intimidate those who speak out against the administration. He makes arbitrary decisions that favor his "pets" and he punishes those who don't play politics (he'll allow a favorite to attend an international conference but won't allow someone else to attend because of the "no international travel" policy - even if both faculty members have been accepted to present original research). The President has created a hostile work environment that is toxic.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The Board of Trustees should demand anonymous evaluations of upper administration and take the time to listen to students and faculty. Realize that the President shows one face to you and the community and a different face to those he works with.

I worked at Collin County Community College part-time

    Pros

In large part, the students are serious about their education. Faculty can teach independently without being micro-managed. Nice facilities at all three campuses. The connection with students and their appreciation makes it all worth it.

    Cons

Difficult to become a full-time faculty member as there are many associate faculty. The compensation is fair, but for an associate faculty member it should be treated as a side gig in addition to another full-time job. Access to facilities for weekend classes is challenging as there is a lack of communication between security and weekend class coordinators.

I have been working at Collin County Community College full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    Good benefits; lots of vacation and personal time; 8am - 5pm schedule so there is not a lot of overtime or working late;

    Cons

Not a creative bunch overall; leadership doesn't seem to see how ineffective their middle management really is; much of the corporate culture involves many "thats not my job" people

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would suggest 360 reviews so that all levels of management understand opportunities for improvement. I'd also look at the jobs of your Associate VP's to evaluate their real ROI

I have been working at Collin County Community College full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

My experience with middle management and down has been very good. They've been willing to make changes that are in the best interest of the school and the students. The benefits for full time staff are pretty good.

    Cons

It takes too long to have meaningful changes made. The approval process at the upper management/board level hurts the school. The upper management means well. The President is doing a great job, but it seems like it takes too long to make changes that don't come from upper management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a way to speed up approvals and changes when suggested from the employees below. The school is too slow at adapting.

I have been working at Collin County Community College part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The staff is very helpful and friendly. The facilities, resources and technology are up to date and generally in working condition. There is good support from all areas. Any issues that arise are resolved quickly and in a friendly manner.

    Cons

The adjunct offices are rather small (particularly at Spring Creek Campus. There are some professors (adjunct) with poor attitudes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There could be a bit more attention to the stability of adjunct work, and to the creation of full-time positions where adjuncts are many.
