Really good place to complete articling

I have been working at Collins Barrow full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    -Workplace culture is pretty good
-Colleagues are generally great to work with and often develop into great friendships
-Flexible working schedule - as long as you get your work done in a timely and efficient manner you can essentially come and go as needed
-Great articling experience - you get to work on more senior work and take on more responsibility earlier in your career which can give leg up on others
-The internal CASB training and UFE prep program are excellent! The employees assisting the students take a genuine interest in seeing the students succeed and will often work with students to individualize a learning approach that best works for them. Easily the best place to complete your articling in my opinion.
-For the most part, the management team is pretty good and easy to work with.

    Cons

-The pay is very low once you have completed your designation, especially compared to industry and even other CA firms
-Seniors are overworked, underpaid and under appreciated
-Performance reviews appear to be arbitrary and are inconsistently done. Hard work and strong knowledge are not rewarded as much being buddies with the right people. This can have a profound impact on your career there in that you could be assigned all the messy and difficult clients making less than someone who only works on easy engagements

The last several years has seen all senior accountants quit well before they are eligible for the manager promotion...that says alot.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay your senior staff market wages if you want them to stay past getting their designation

    Pros

Good culture and everyone is helpful. Management is engaging and always providing constructive criticism. Environment is great and resources are available to complete task.

    Cons

Hours are just as bad as big 4 and the average salary is not up to par with the market rate. Bonuses are not up to par either.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider significant pay raise for high performers

I have been working at Collins Barrow full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The workplace culture of Collins Barrow is significantly better than several other accounting firms in the downtown financial district area.

    Cons

Don't get paid enough compared to all the work you have to do. Do not get promoted as fast as other places. Managers at other firms are seniors at Collins Barrow.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Collins Barrow

    Pros

    - Fewer hours than big 4 and comparable pay
    - Get paid for overtime
    - 50% off gym membership
    - Staff events almost every month
    - Firm sponsored teams

    Cons

    - The more you improve, the more work they pile on
    - There is a shortage of quality middle level managers (partners and senior managers are excellent)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - More jobs should be considered on performance reviews
    - Provide more positive feedback and less negative feedback
    - Be more accessible
