Good investment culture, but marketing average and Edinburgh sets direction too strongly

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Colonial First State Global Asset Management full-time

ProsGood investment culture, good people and good exchange of ideas between people.
Committed to sustainability.
Work/life good.
People nice.

ConsIn the Asset Management arm, strategically Edinburgh has too much sway. And recent choices in strategic product have - in my view - been poor. The Edinburgh team are good in EMs, but unsure if that philosophy and strategy is applicable to everything. It then means that strategic direction is potentially not balance.
Also arguably sales and marketing not as strong as peers.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt's a tricky one as Edinburgh brings so much income. But try and look at all stakeholders in a balanced way and if possible skill up sales and marketing.

Good, friendly people, but not always of the highest calibre

Analyst (Former Employee)

I worked at Colonial First State Global Asset Management

Pros- People there (vast majority) seem genuinely nice, friendly atmosphere
- Some excellent staff in investment teams
- Some select teams with very strong investment performance track record, but disproportionately in offshore teams (First State)
- Can see senior management trying to set proper strategic direction, and trying to be innovative
- Ability to get good work-life balance
- Good office location (Martin Place)

Cons- Despite big presence in Australia, not necessarily considered a 'blue-chip' firm by other employers
- The pay for non-senior staff is not great, but still reasonable
- Some not as good staff in investment teams
- Based on several, separate floors, with concentration of decision-making power on one particular floor

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep working on strategic plan - its set and headed the right direction, and good things will happen if executed well.

Perhaps instill a greater 'performance culture' - to really drive investment performance higher.
