I worked at Columbia Asia full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

not much. it is a good place to start or just to accumulate some experience or either a place for people looking for a last station before they retire/or are already retired.

    Cons

not a place for ambitious young people.poor financial management. constantly out of stock.poor payment record to suppliers. constantly being shut out by suppliers due to non payment by head office.top management have poor understanding of the business that they are running.instead they run it as though they hospitals are like mcdonalds outlets.top management's objective of opening as many branches as they can even though most of the existing facilities are not profitable is very discomforting to staff who know about the dire financial situation. rumours of possible sale as malaysian business unit is neck deep in debt. poor support from top management.lack of general gruop wide sops and compliance to sop is poor due to top management's spineless back bending to please doctors.causes friction with staff as pleasing the doctors erode staff's ability to achieve kpis.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

have a plan and follow it through. stop pleasing doctors just for the sake of it. doctors must play by the same rules. remove unethical doctors and practices.stop opening branches when you are so deep in debt and practically insolvent that new wings of the second oldest facility in malaysia cannot even be furbished (as in having the floors tiled, rooms painted and fitted with equipment despite the demand for it).just focus on making current facilities profitable. realize that hospitals are not like fast food restaurants.nobody dies at the mcdonalds, but people do die when your doctors make a bad call.help staff to achieve kpi.not hinder them and constantly move the goal posts.

    Pros

Not much that I can think of.they have some good and loyal staff.good place to spend the last years of your career.

    Cons

Poor support from top management.incessant interference from doctors and top management constant bending over the backs to please doctors at the expense of staff and patients.poor understanding of ethics from management and doctors.very profit oriented.very poor benefits for a hospital group.staff have to co pay for treatment at same rate leading to unfair treatment for low income staff.both the rich and por pay the same co pay rate.holding company is practically insolvent.good example of a zombie firm.the group seem more interested in opening branches than focusing on making each branch profitable.for many years the only profitable branch was the one in the southern zone.holding company neck deep in debt.unable to satisfy creditors leading to frequent stock outs and delayed deliveries.rumors of possible sell out.poor career development.people sitting in the corporate office do not know what it takes to run hospitals.many have no or little experience at the ground level.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on being profitable.support your staff.building many new branches with most of the old one not profitable for years is not a business strategy, perhaps it is a good signaling strategy for sale.have a clear path for career progression for young and ambitious staff.dont hope that people will stay long in a position so that it is convenient for management.
