I have been working at Columbia Association full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Flexible work schedule, fantastic benefits, 401k, vacation/sick/holiday/personal time for full time and vacation/sick for part time, cell phone and driving reimbursement, gym memberships, fitness and health programming.

    Cons

Lower salaries vs. competitors, can be an extremely demanding organization as CA constantly is competing and striving to be the leader and cutting edge.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Advice for Management - If CA would pay it's entry and mid level management a more respectable salary, the organization could attract top quality talent. By doing so, it would definitely benefit the organization as CA is going through some major changes. Having young top talent would benefit this organization, but CA needs to provide more competitive financial compensation.

    Pros

There are a lot of people at the pool, so it is a great place to socialize and help out the community.

    Cons

Current Employee - Assistant Manager in Columbia, MD

I have been working at Columbia Association part-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Working outdoors in the summer is great. You usually work with a great group of people and manage to have fun. Being able to set your own hours is a big bonus. It is great pay for a summer job and it isn't that difficult.

    Cons

The management is awful. They have double standards, play favorites, are unorganized, and consistently get their employee's pay wrong. They are not professional. The customers you serve can also be a hard to deal with, but it's better to know how to handle those types of situations.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire qualified management, not your friends.

Current Employee - Swim Lesson Instructor in Columbia, MD

I have been working at Columbia Association part-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

fun environment, laidback vibe and all of the employees and bosses are super nice and helpful. The kids are always fun to work with and the on decks are always available to help

    Cons

not enough hours to work at times, some shifts last up to 3 hours and the pool is very cold, the aquatics office and payroll do not have good communication and frequently "misplace" the paperwork needed to ensure their employees get paid or the hours reported do not match the actual hours worked and not enough money is granted to their employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

HAve better communication with payroll, update the report cards for the last day of lessons and have periodic brainstorming meetings with instructors so we actually have a way to contribute and update the program since we are the ones working it all the time.

Former Employee - Pool Manager in Columbia, MD

I worked at Columbia Association part-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Ability to work long hours, flexible schedule and working with young people. There is a lot of freedom as to how you run the pool, and you have the opportunity to make your own schedule.

    Cons

Company does very little to support the staff that works at the pool, little to no effective communication from the top down and you will only make substantial money if you are willing to invest 60+ hours to the job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer more support to the people who are the face of the company, don't focus as much on the networks and computers as you do the human capital.

Current Employee - Day Care Attendant

I have been working at Columbia Association part-time for less than a year

    Pros

    Pay greater than minimum wage
    Relatively flexible hours

    Cons

Very little opportunity for pay promotion (review once every year)
Working with mentally handicapped children without any training

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is really nothing I can say. The nature of the business is such that it is very difficult to shine. Compared to a sales job, where one can outsell other employees, at this job there is only a job you can either do or not do.

Although, I would advise that the company conduct a review and subsequent pay raise every 3 months rather than every year. I was not motivated in the least to perform well (although I did out of principle) or stay at the company.

I worked at Columbia Association part-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Friendly place
depending on the manager you get a lot of room to do what you want
    relaxed work place

    Cons

    No room for growth
Average age is mid 40s I assume
People arent very smart or ambitious
    Doesnt pay very well

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Push your people harder and let them know that there is young talent that will replace them in a heart beat. Everyone here has been around for years and isn't going anywhere, this isn't ok when your revenue is mostly forced community tax money on columbia residents.

    Cons

    -Management resistant to change
    -Poor salary and benefits
    -Not much room for growth

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more open to new ideas. Recommendations from those in lower positions are often the best because we work directly with the customers, and know all that goes into one days operations.
