Classic example of office cliques which result in unfavorable treatment and inevitable low morale.

    Pros

Great training, nice environment, easy commute.

    Cons

Office 'politics' which benefits the minority at the cost of the many. Low morale, resentment, and loss of respect for leadership.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't make promises you have no intentions of keeping; treat ALL employees with the same respect and provide opportunities and training based on something other than popularity within a small clique close to management.

Former Employee - Sales in Boston, MA

    Pros

hour for lunch, other sales guy are decent people, once in a while a manager will actually help you if HE likes you (don't look for much upward mobility if you don't look like an extra in Fever Pitch)

    Cons

overbearing managers, no room to breath, people worried about their position over the growth of own employers

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn to be more open minded.

    Pros

Good culture overall, good people. Good performing funds overall. Lots of product (too much!)

    Cons

Ameriprise is a lousy parent company who doesn't really understand the asset management business and thinks very short-term. Columbia inherited a lot of problems from Ameriprise's fund family, so now Columbia is in massive net redemptions and because of this can't pay more than industry average. They also have very generic product line-up and no real brand identity, so I don't see this firm becoming an industry leader anytime soon.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Spin off from Ameriprise

    Pros

Great place to gain exposure to every aspect of the investment markets. Well known portfolio managers that are happy to mentor young analysts.

    Cons

Terrible mid-level management. Instead of firing under-performing analysts they promote them to managers so they don't mess up any work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't be afraid to weed out the bottom performers.

    Cons

It is not a huge company. There are not always open positions to move up in the company

    Recommends
    Positive Outlook
