I have been working at Columbia University

    Pros

Pay is good. If you don't spend too much, the salary actually is much higher than other universities for a graduate research assistant

    Cons

It is not easy to get in, since it does not enroll that many Ph.D. students.

    Pros

Great environment to foster learning, more collarborative than one might expect.

    Cons

Poor benefits and salary, but nothing worse than other graduate programs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better pay (or at least benefits) would make people a lot happier and more productive.

Current Employee - Lab Manager in New York, NY

I have been working at Columbia University full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Working at Columbia University provides you with an opportunity to not only meet world-renowned scientists and professors, but also to participate in scientific research, which has implications beyond the laboratory. If you put the required effort and work, you will have a chance of being included among the authors in a scientific paper.

    Cons

The overall bureaucracy is pretty bad and communication with or between the many departmental offices can be challenging. Disconnect between the main campus and the Medical Center is troubling but not unmanageable.

I have been working at Columbia University

    Pros

Students are given flexible hours, managers are understanding during finals and midterms season, and the pay isn't that bad for something on campus

    Cons

The pay could be better, since the work is so flexible and meant for students its often unrewarding and boring... I rarely had anything to do nonetheless something interesting

    I worked at Columbia University

    Pros

Great benefits, beautiful campus, can have great colleagues

    Cons

Low pay. What will make or break your experience are the people you work with and for. CU is huge and every school/dept has its own feel and culture. Vet these people well to be sure it's a good fit.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't lose good people because they refuse to play dirty. Don't reward malicious behavior.

I worked at Columbia University full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Salary is ok
    Benefits are decent

    Cons

Incompetent management , absolutely not one bit of empathy from management
Second guessed, monday morning quarterbacked on decisions
Lack of clarity on Policy . There is such a high level of turn over in the position of Sgt that it makes it almost impossible to get a day off. No union protection on Sgt position . Place is riddled with nepotism and cronyism making it almost impossible to get promoted.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start with treating individuals with empathy and respect
