Great product, but internal politics make it unbearable!

I worked at Comcast Spotlight full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great staff! All support like Marketing, Research, Sports, Online, Creative, Account Coordinators and Sales Planners do a great job and are overworked and underpaid! Free cable is great, but health/dental benefits are more expensive then any place I've ever worked.

    Cons

Way too many layers of middle-management, and the infrastructure support is running way to lean! Chargeback policy is ridiculous and Comcast takes the measly 6-10% of your commission if client doesn't pay within 90 days (if the Billing Dept doesn't receive payment IN THEIR HANDS on day 91, rep gets no money). Reps currently have class action lawsuit against Comcast on this (former/current California reps - see Comcast vs. Hurley for updates on this).

    Advice to Management

Change commission structure (and change chargeback policy). Base and commission is way too low compared to other media companies. Also the Us (Management) vs. Them (Reps) mentality has got to go. Reward ALL your successful reps, otherwise it looks like you have favorites. Don't put reps on Performance Plans after not making quota for 2-months, especially if they are still bringing in a lot of revenue. It's demotivating and negative reinforcement is an old school way of thinking like "the beatings will continue until morale improves".

I worked at Comcast Spotlight full-time

    Pros

    free X1 cable, phone, internet

    Cons

Account Planners have the WORST JOB, they're treated like garbage. They're underpaid, have the WORST SUPERVISOR who would ask you to flex a 30-minute time off because you need to go to a doctor or need to go to your daughter's soccer game. To add injury to the to insult, if you want to advance in the company, do not expect a support from your supervisor. APS are expected to say YES to everything and need to be involved in everything. They can't function without us and yet they treat us like garbage.

    Advice to Management

This a highly stressful department. They need a supervisor who knows how to lead, coach and motivate, and not just some sales assistant who doesn't know how to speak and just say yes to management at all times.

I have been working at Comcast Spotlight (More than a year)

    Pros

Amazingly innovative advertising products. A bleeding edge technology company disguised as a cable company. Excellent benefits and work life balance.

    Cons

Overcoming public perception of the parent company's reputation can be a challenge.

    Advice to Management

Continue to lead us to new opportunities for our clients and challenge us to make bold moves forward.

I have been working at Comcast Spotlight full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Helpful LSM, fellow salespople, sales assistants. Subsidized cable and fun happy hours! Cool events and sports tickets for our customers. More than fair customer service adjustments.

    Cons

Others have mentioned that "Senior management has no clue how to run a sales organization". I hate to pile on and be "unoriginal" but is absolutely true! My original thought is there's a feeling in the air that the company is going out of business. It is much like a NY Deli that watches every penny, is constantly understaffed, and promotes the head sandwich maker from outside.

    Advice to Management

Promote from within! Keep staffing levels at normal levels for calendar year. Listen to your salespeople! Fix broken comp. plan which has gone against sales every time it changes! Such actions lead employees to believe that the company is going under (it certainly is not!) much like the newest NY Deli on the block. Comcast, you can do better!

I worked at Comcast Spotlight full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

For the most part it's a great company with great people. If you work hard and are respectful, you'll have a job there for a long time.

    Cons

They don't pay as much as broadcast stations and don't get nearly as involved in the community.

    Advice to Management

Small businesses don't care about your metrics. If you go around talking about how the small business is the foundation of your billing, don't ignore them or their feedback/concerns with how you're doing business.
