I worked at Comfort Systems USA

    Pros

CSUSA is an NYSE traded, large HVAC contractor and service provider. They have built their original core on ACTUAL companies with organic services and revenue. In most other areas of the country they have bought HVAC companies and grown artificially into a very large "company" who service almost every state.

    Cons

In the course of wall street (OPM) expansion and buyouts or 'tuck-ins' or 'roll-ins' as CS calls them, they are very decentralized, which isn't necessarily good or bad. In some parts of the country they dominate and provide killer construction and HVAC services. In other parts (Tampa Bay and Florida) they have failed miserably to make a positive impact in the most HVAC-heavy state in the country. In Tampa's regional offices, they've gone through as many as 5 or 6 managers since 2010. They've churned and burned dozens of Techs and Sales people as well. CSUSA may be good elsewhere, but they have sucked, and continue to suck in Tampa and Florida, from what I hear and have recently heard (Dec 2014) from insiders still there.

    Pros

Very large company with long standing growth and stability

    Cons

No commitment to keeping the right employees or treating customers better. JCI will not follow contract terns with customers and will try to not repair anything that will hurt the numbers for that month

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to you frontline employees and customers about what they see wrong with jci

I have been working at Comfort Systems USA

    Pros

Freedom to work independently. Local management help to succeed. Great compensation and benefits.

    Cons

Many Customers lost due to inexperienced technicians sent to accounts that they were not qualified to handle. Accounts were put off for several days due to coordinator wanting to send a certain technician that was not available even though other qualified technicians were being sent home and not to this particular account instead. This was the norm, not just occasional. Poor management across the board for field techs and service personnel. All personnel did not get benefit for years of service. Upper management would do it one year and not again for several years thus some employees did not get the bonus or being acknowledged. No continuity in management

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to field sales people when customers are leaving or not sending all their business to us because of the lack of urgency by in house service support. This was pointed out for five consecutive years but never addressed by management.

    Pros

They truly care about their employees and families. There are a lot of opportunities for advancement within the company and they believe in promoting from within.

    Cons

The pay is a little lower but the compensation and benefits package is pretty good. Sometimes the goals that Senior Management puts in place is not realistic.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put a little more trust in the people that you have and stop pointing the finger at everyone else. This is not wide spread but I have noticed it in a few locations

Employees and managers genuinely care about the people around them and what they are doing. Hard work and effort are recognized and rewarded and there are opportunities for advancement for those who perform.

    Cons

The HVAC industry is not for those who only want to work 8-5

    Pros

Management cares about the employees. The benefits are very good. The culture is laid back but busy environment in a growth mode which means opportunities for employees to advance internally.

    Cons

A bit Silo'd in departments. More communication about what is occurring in the company. Not all employees have an email and difficult to know what is happening unless you hear it from another employee or manager that has email.

    Pros

Decent pay and benefits . Work load is decent they have kept me busy so I get my 40 hours.

    Cons

I was hired on by the previous Director of Service. He had a great vision and was a great leader. He was actually making great progress according to fellow technicians that had been there a while. He was let go due to a conflict with the current President. Now they have brought in another Service leader who is supposedly an old friend of the President. I was told by a fellow technician that his new guy is the 5th person to oversee the service department in the last 8 years. That's a problem to me ,how long will this guy last. They had a great service leader and let him go due to the fact he didn't fit the mold the president and his senior management wanted .

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Corporate in Houston needs to look into the issues here. I for one am currently looking as well as other technicians here who are fed up with the senior management. Should have never let the previous Service Director go he was a good manager and was well liked. The techs respected him and knew where they stood with him a real stand up type of leader.

    Pros

Love and respect several of the team members that take the abuse but keep trying despite it

    Cons

Someone is fired/"let go" every few weeks. It seems like only the numbers matter, employees and customers are seen as easily disposable items. Your pay depends on who you know, not how much you contribute. Management often asks for suggestions, but quickly dismisses any ideas that aren't theirs. Overall, it is an extremely juvenile and distinctional place to work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Talk to the employees that are carrying the team (not necessarily the ones you are friends with). Seriously take the time to listen to their suggestions for improved growth and productivity. All the employees should be treated fairly and with respect (not just a select few).
