    Sales not a priority

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsGreat sales management group, works toward common goals in sales department

ConsLegal and credit department are main decision makers in a very conservative vein. Sales management support is futile against these other two groups.

Solid bank consistently ranked in the top ten banks in the country.

    Senior Vice President (Current Employee)
    Denver, CO

ProsFinancial strength of the bank. Above average ROE, ROA, total capitalization, and low loan losses. Flat management structure allows for quicker decisions from a seasoned credit team.

ConsSteady & slow approach to bank and loan portfolio acquisitions has lead to missed opportunities for growth.

Advice to Senior ManagementIncrease local lending limit authority.

It's a job and I'm thankful for it, especially in today's economy.

    Account Executive (Current Employee)

ProsFinancially stable, well established / long history in the banking business.

ConsCompensation plan is too complicated. The penalty aspect built into the plan is de-motivating.

Not sure they can catch up to the competitors in the solutions marketplace

Advice to Senior ManagementLagging behind in the application of technology in the marketplace. Get rid of the complicated comp plan - show you really value your employees in deed not just words.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

    Great First Job

    Financial Specialist (Current Employee)
    Kansas City, MO

ProsIt is a great organization to learn and train within the banking industry, then take those skills to other competitors who can appreciate your skills. The bank operates on the same value system it was established on many, many years ago. They operate as a family unit, very tight knit and hard to penetrate the upper echelons.

ConsEmployees are often pigeon-holed into a certain role, limiting upward mobility. Compensation is far below the competition and the "creative math" the company uses to justify the salaries is comical.

    Long time Commerce Bank Employee

    Branch Manager (Former Employee)

ProsGreat company culture. The top people in the company are awesome leaders. Commerce Bank hires some really good people and that is one of the many reasons why they've been successful.

Commerce is also very community oriented.

ConsMiddle management is a bit cut-throat at times. HR is very slow and tends to play favorites.

Cut backs can lead to a very unbalanced work/life balance.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease continue to promote within the company. I've seen outsiders from other institutions damage the culture and standards of the product at several branches.

Decent Place to work but be prepared to check your brain at the door.

    Small Business Banker (Current Employee)

    ProsMinimal expectations, low stress, stable

ConsLots of red tape, bureaucratic, meetings for the sake of meeting, no clearly defined career path, limited growth opportunities
